2-Rescue's And Need Lots Of Help!!!!!!

Postby river-7 » Fri Aug 08, 2014 2:16 am

:gcc: I received 2-rescue birds, [conure's] from a man that was leaving the country. I have owned 1-gcc before quit a long time ago and got her as a baby[beautiful little baby] -1-baby is 3-1/2 months old and the other baby is just 8-months old and both are beautiful mutations. The 8-month old is female. The baby 3-1/2 month old don't know but acts like a male would. My questions are on their care-even I know that they are very tiny birds too tiny. Can someone please advice me on their care.I have had them about 4-days.I have got them to eat fresh salad and they acted starved to dealth-but man not too much of that salad went on the ground just what they didn't want. What can I do to help them with some much needed weight on.?? I have no idea of what food they ate as no one seemed to know. The young 1-has already came out of her cage and sat on top[both fully flighted] And the older 1-has made an attempt to come out she is getting closer to coming out but I think she is frightened. I have quarenteened them in my bedroom for 30-days. I go in and out the bedroom all day and talk to them and they both greet me upon coming in.And a vet visit will come when they come out of quaranteen. The older 1-seems more frightened then the younger 1-but has come on my arm and tasted me while i'm hanging toys or giving surprise little treats.I need all the advice and tips for these 2-babie's as they need all the help we can give them. PS; I don't believe in mutation birds but they too need a home. And they now have a stable one.I read somewhere that conure's need protein in their diet true or not.a piece of boiled chicken maybe?? Egg, beans sprouts, quinioa[sp]??? Thanks to all that respond to help us-River-7 :gcc: :gcc:

Both of these babies need to be put on a weaning formula asap. If you can't get any right away you can try a high quality baby food from your grocers. Look for the least amount of sugar and chemical additives, and feed at least twice a day. in addition to fresh fruit and vegetables. If you want to try a seed mix try a canary mix and soak it to soften the seeds for them, drain and give for dinner.

GCCs are mostly fruit eaters in the wild so, although they do need protein (every living thing does), they don't do well when you give them too much. The younger one is still a baby and should be getting a couple of fresh soft foods twice a day (oatmeal, couscous, polenta, multigrain bread, etc but you can also wean it to gloop), cooked veggies (you can mix them with the soft food) or baby food from jars, a big piece of fruit (they do love their fruit) and a leafy green on a daily basis.

Pajarita mentioned on a post of mine that white rice is "empty calories" and is used when you need birds to gain weight rapidly. It has to be cooked completely and I'm not sure how that works with the baby, as in whether or not he can have some. I suggest sticking with the previous replies for advice though, I'm pretty new to birds! Good luck

And GCCs need lots and lots of personal attention-especially that 3 month old! More even than your Senegal.

Harpmaker; Thanks so much to all that responded.I have noticed that they need a lot of attention. The baby comes to me quit willingly, and sits in my hands and checks me out.I guess I know what gloop is now-I have heard people talking about it and now I know. All baby food over hear is really unbelievable full of salt and sugar. I have a food processor so I will make my own for them.Man this will be hard I have never had babies this small, unless they were very young and being hand fed. These babies are the age stated fully feathered ect; but I had a conure at 8-weeks when I got her and she was bigger then this 3-month old.i will start cooking for them today.and see if they will take it. I put some seed down on the floor of the cage[in a little bowl] as the 3-month old was not eating hers and she ate right away.I think they were both taught to eat of the floor of cage.As soon as I put it down they went right in it and started to eat.I have multi grain rice couscous, quinio, pasta ect; pretty a lot of stuff I can make up for them, just wanted to check here first as I know a lot of you have conures.I will add a scrambled egg to this mess I will make. And I am pretty sure they will eat whatever I make.Their personalities are really quit comical as they both like to hang by 1-foot from top of cage. The little 1-keeps going after her mineral block, don't bother the cuttle bone just the block so she is lacking something in her diet. Ok, thanks everyone and I will keep you all updated. River-7 :gcc:

Morning; Everyone and thanks for all that replied.I am giving them quinoa this morning and see if they will eat it and I have made up couscous multigrain rice, some white beans and I will warm everything and serve it after mashing it all up. Hope this works for them. They seem to like what I have given so far and no complaints. Can I give some finch and canary soaked seeds?? Will that help them any?? They always say this helps to put weight on and of course some soaked millet to get them started.Any response we will be grateful for thanks again River-7 :gcc:

I don't see why not, although I would probably hold off on the seed until dinner time for them.

Quinoa has high protein, it's better if you use lower protein grains and mix them 50/50 with veggies.
