Powdery Birds with Oily Birds

Postby Navre » Wed Aug 20, 2014 10:52 am

I was previously advised against keeping powder down birds (Greys, Cockatoos) with oily down birds. I was told that the powder produced by a Grey or a large cockatoo would be detrimental to the health of birds like conures and Amazons.

I notice that many people in the forum house these types of birds together. my information is 25 years old. Has the prevailing opinion on this changed?

I'm not planning on getting another bird, but i wasn't planning on getting this one. I just want to know if it would be bad for my conure's health if I were to take in a homeless cockatiel, grey, etc.

While I have no personal experience, I hear that a good air HEPA filter helps. The dust can be bad enough to affect humans, and Amazons seem to be even more sensitive than other birds. A lot of people still separate Greys and Cockatoos from Amazons. They can be in the same house, but you may need two bird rooms.

As far as I am aware of there has been no change in this. I do have a CAG in the same room as my Amazon, Senegal, and Parrotlet. I also keep two air purifiers running when the windows are not open. I have had no problems with this setup.

Actually, it's macaws that are more affected than other species by the dust but, although the information is still valid, we now have great air purifiers (which we didn't 20 years ago) so, as long as the dusty bird gets a bath once a week (helps A LOT with feather dander), you sweep/vacuum/dust and mop and keep an adequate air purification system, there is no danger.
