Are these ingredients ok for birdie bread?

Postby paper_lantern » Sat Aug 23, 2014 4:32 pm

Most birdie bread recipes call for corn bread mix. I went to buy some but didn't like the fact that sugar was one of the first ingredients. Instead I opted for Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free Baking Flour. The ingredients are Garbanzo Bean flour, Potato Starch, Tapioca Flour, and Fava Bean Flour.

Are all of these ok?

I'm a bit worried about the Garbanzo and Fava Bean flour since I know beans need to be SUPER well cooked before feeding to parrots. Would the flour be ok once it is cooked into a bread? I would of course be adding lots of veggies to this bread to make it healthier. I just want to make sure it's alright before cooking it. Thanks!

You can make your own corn bread mix by using straight corn meal, 1 cup, and all purpose flour, 1 cup, and aluminum free baking powder, 1 tsp.
It has been a while since I made a corn bread mix, as such, so it might need a little more baking powder.

But why buy a gluten free flour? Just get some whole wheat and unbleached flour, corn meal, oatmeal (the old-fashioned kind) and aluminum free baking powder if you want a biscuit type or dry yeast if you want a real bread type (then you would add all the 'goodies' like a bit of olive oil, fruit juice or water, some nuts and/or whole cereal grains, pumpkin puree and/or mashed sweet potatoes and/or grated carrots and/or grated zucchini and/or raisins and/or currants and/or fresh corn, etc etc). I make birdy bread in my bread machine ($20 in Craig's list because you don't need any fancy one that makes 30 different things, just a plain one that makes bread) and it's the easiest thing in the world! I dump all the ingredients in it before I go to bed, start it and, in the morning, there is birdybread ready to serve. All you have to do is follow (loosely) the recipe for whole wheat bread in terms of quantities (like how many total cups of flour for a one pound bread) and experiment a couple of times until you get the right moisture but it doesn't even matter if it comes out a bit too dry or too moist because the birds love it anyway -and you can freeze it!)

Pajarita, I didn't choose gluten free on purpose. It's just the only kind that didn't have weird ingredients like sugar, salt, and things I can't even pronounce. I live in a really small community so choices are pretty limited. I'll look into what you mentioned, your recipe sounds fantastic.

As of right now, should I return the flour I bought? Or is it safe to use?

You can use it, I just think it's more expensive than regular whole grain flours that you can find in a regular supermarket and not really necessary.
