Bird diet Q's

Postby Squawk » Tue Aug 26, 2014 5:19 am

It's been a year or two since I've owned birds, but since I've been without a flock for awhile I'm starting to prepare for a new one. In the past, my parents had helped me care for my birds; they took care of buying the food while I was elected cage-cleaner and bird handler.
Here's my question: is Tofu good for birds?
Tofu was the main source of protein for my old conure, african grey, and Senegal parrots. I've never heard of anyone feeding their parrot tofu before... my parents used to cook it until soft, with spaghetti sauce/tomato paste for flavoring (we basically added it to our spaghetti dinner and picked out tofu for the birds to eat) and they absolutely loved it, though they weren't so enthusiastic about it without the sauce. We had birds for about 13 years, and it was very rare they had health problems.
Here's another question: what are good sources of protein for parrots? (other than tofu, I mean). And what do folks on this forum feed their birds? Curious.

Well, I personally won't touch the stuff at all for me or my birds although for different reasons. For the birds it is hard enough to keep their protein intake down to safe levels as it is without a concentrated source of it. Too much protein in their diet just causes to many problems such as putting and keeping them in a breeding state, aggression and liver problems to name a couple of things.
I feed Gloop in the mornings followed with a fresh fruit and a couple of fresh vegetables for munching on through the day and a high quality seed mix for dinner.

Same here, no soy in any form for any of my animals (dogs, cats, birds). Too iffy and unnatural, two things I don't like at all when it comes to their nutrition. And no salt, either (spaghetti sauces are loaded with it).

I also feed gloop (whole cereal grains, pulses and a tiny bit of flax providing the protein in it) with raw produce for breakfast and, for dinner, a good quality seed mix for a smaller parrot than what they actually are - except for the budgies which, along with the tiels, eat a budgie mix - the larger parrots (amazons, grays, cockatoos, conures, jardine, senegals, redbellied, quaker) eat a 50/50 combination of a cockatiel mix with some striped sunflowers and a small pscittacine mix which is safflower-based plus a nut or two depending on the species itself.
