What should I be feeding my baby GCC?

Postby Piromane » Sun Sep 28, 2014 8:15 pm

So, Archer's 9 weeks old as of Saturday 28th, he was hand reared by a breeder and moved onto a mix of parakeet and parrot feed, some of which he gave to me, he has this accompanied by fruit and veg daily,

I want to make sure he's getting all the right stuff, he last thing I want to see is my friend getting under or overweight, so any advice would be fantastic,

Thanks a lot for your time!

At this early age I think that I would give him some of the weaning food that the breeder was using twice a day for a while longer and plenty of veggies and some fruit and finish off with a budgie seed mix.

Unless I misunderstood, he was not given weaning food by the breeder (parrot and parakeet 'feed' which I take this to be seed mixes -please correct me if I am wrong). I would give him two different soft foods served fresh twice a day until he goes through the juvenile molt and then put him just on gloop and produce for breakfast and all day picking and a good quality budgie seed mix for dinner. GCCs are mainly fruit eaters in the wild and they can't eat high protein food all day long or you mess up their liver and kidneys.

He was given the weaning food and then moved onto the parakeet/parrot seed mix, from what I understand, I can always contact the breeder to confirm, but I'll definitely go and get the budgie seed tomorrow, and I can tell, he's especially a carrot fan :)

Thanks again for the information guys, you two have been fantastic and I appreciate it, sorry for the multiple questions ~ I'd just rather see him fed and cared for correctly then risk anything,

Budgie seed mix is great for dinner but you need to feed cooked whole grains with veggies as well as some other type of soft food based on couscous, polenta, steel cut oats, whole grain pasta, etc

I am not positive about this but it seems to me that gloop would also answer all the requirements for a weaning formula too. See what Pajarita thinks about that thought.

Oh, yes, indeed, gloop is a perfect soft food for babies!
