I am sorry but I disagree on two points. First of all, no parrot should eat High Potency all the time. This is specifically explained on the label, High Potency is only to be used as a temporary feed for parrots that are been switched to a pellet diet or by sick or recuperating birds. It's way too high in protein, vitamins and minerals for them to eat every day and, if you do, you will end up with a parrot with fatty liver and gout. I've been finding more and more people whose AVs told them to switch to HP as an everyday food and that only reinforces my conviction that AVs should not be giving advice on something they don't know enough about, namely, parrots diets. If a manufacturer, which is the party most interested in selling a product to you, is telling you it's no good for every day, you better listen!

As to babies needing weaning after been sold... well, for one thing, all babies regress when they go to a new home (and some adults, too) and, for another, breeders considered a baby weaned way before the age they wean in the wild so soft food is always recommended for a longer period of time.

Well, it seems to me that while we can debate all we want about whether a properly weaned baby bird does or does not sometimes need additional weaning, we really can't deny that some of these birds are not properly weaned and therefore do need the extra support. And since this is the case it doesn't make sense to return the bird to a breeder who may have not done his job properly and trust him to do it right the next time. I would rather do it myself. Also many of these birds are purchased through pet stores and the buyer never meets the breeder.

Harrisons High Potency is for transition, as stated in my post. Please read carefully.

Babies do not need weaning after being sold if they have been properly weaned.

No, you said to switch to another pellet 'if you want" which implies an equal option in terms of dietary requirements but it's not and, as it is dangerous to feed them HP every day, it needs to be specifically addressed.

Although there might be breeders that wean properly, I've never come across any (you can tell by the age at which the babies are been sold).

Its your choice when it comes to pellets or gloop just make sure you introduce as much different fresh fruits and veg as you can. What he likes now will change months or years later.

P.S just in case you don't what gloop is viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13102

Cage Cleaner wrote:It ultimately depends on what you want to be feeding him after he gets older. If it's pellets, I recommend harrison's high potency. It is very enticing and tastes very good to them, so it makes a smooth transition to pellets. Pellets are generally teh accepted food of choice for most people as it is most balanced. Harrisons is also recommened by vets. After the parrot realizes that pellets are food, you can switch to other pellets, if you want. Or, to Harrison's lifetime, if you want.

If you want to stick with seed or other sources, then just stick with those.

The baby should no longer need weaning food. He should be fully weaned. If he isn't fully weaned, then you need to take him back to the breeder. Weaning shouldn't be done by anyone other than a professional.

Edit: Also, offer fruit/veggies daily. Give him some of everything you can so that he gets used to those from a young age and you don't have to teach him later that he should be eating it.

It might very well be that you meant "switch to either another pellet brand or to Harrison's lifetime" but the way it was written, I understood the switch to be an option.
