cookware help...

Postby mulatte27 » Sun Oct 05, 2014 4:40 pm

I of course purchased my new home and had to have new cookware... this was of course before I ended up getting my feathered friend.. I know the dangers of nonstick and Teflon... have read all about it... now my question is what happens when you can't find out if your pans have PTFE or POFA... they are rachael ray... 10 piece cookware set... from what I can find online they have a porcelain enamel coating... I have googled for 20 minutes and can't find a reliable source about whether this would be safe...

I would like to know if I have to give my stuff away and go buy new stuff or not... also I have a wilton pizza tray that I am trying to figure out the same info on...

I can't answer your question although I did find out that it is not dishwasher safe. It is manufactured by Meyer Corporation and there is a toll free number (800) 214- 8369 for questions concerning the cookware. This information came from Rachael Ray.com , I hope it helps.

Well the answer I got was that they do not use POFA however they do use PTFE so they recommend putting the bird in another room... Of course this doesn't help me because my downstairs is a fully open layout so all rooms are connected and he's so hand shy that getting him upstairs causes distress... Guess I will be buying new cookware...

I've seen threads about cast iron or stainless steel... I've been told though that stainless steel burns easily and is hard to clean... Are any of the ceramic products safe?

The stainless steel with the copper bottoms are good.

The only reason that good stainless cookware burns is that the heat is too high in the first place.

I use stainless (I didn't want to pay out for cast iron as I had the option of using my grandparents old pans which are years and years old) and have been quite surprised by how well its doing. Not had any issues with stuff burning on until my boyfriend left a pan of pasta on too high a heat and forgot to stir it but even then it wasn't too much of a nightmare to get off.

Stainless steel is not the greatest heat transmitter, which is why some of it comes with copper bottoms or inserts. I was sad to see Revereware was no longer available, since they made a lot of copperbottomed pots, pans, etc.

As far as cleaning goes, I got some of this http://www.amazon.com/Bar-Keepers-Friend%C2%AE-Cleanser-Polish/dp/B000V72992/ref=sr_1_1_m?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1412623388&sr=1-1&keywords=barkeeper%27s+friend stuff to keep my mirror-finish griddle shiny. It works for me, as long as my family doesn't mistake it for sink cleaner.

I looked at cookware a lot when I got Corsair. Several people were asking bird sites if the enamel cookware was OK. The answers were along the lines of "it might be, but I don't want to trust my bird's health to it. "

In fact, it seems that only overheated coatings are deadly, and overheated cooking oil is also bad. The problems seem to be with "helpful" friends and family using high heat without the bird keeper's knowledge or permission. It's just not something most people think about.

Thank you Marie and harp! My big thing is the risk involved... Yeah the company told me "we recommend putting your bird in a different room" and the whole over heating thing.... I mean honestly how often do you stop and take the temp of food you're cooking on your stove? Haha I never have... So I've decided to opt for something I know for a fact is safe... Even though I love the idea of ceramic I've read that it is also debatable as to its safety... So stainless it is... The feedback and input was well appreciated everyone

applejack says thanks too... :sun:

Though I so want to rename him and call him "Zazu McSassy Pants"
