Human illness and birds

Postby Navre » Wed Oct 08, 2014 12:56 pm

I'm sick with some respiratory thing. I'm pretty miserable, but I'm wondering if there is any chance of passing the illness on to my GCC.

I tried to interract with him less, but he'll have non of that and comes over to sit with me on the couch. Should I be keeping him shut up in his cage until I'm feeling better, or can human viruses not infect a bird?

There are bacterial respiratory diseases that can be passed from a human to a bird (psittacosis - bacterial pneumonia, etc) but cold or flu viruses cannot. Having said that, I always make sure I wash my hands very thoroughly and never breathe or cough on them when I have them (I never allow them to kiss my mouth, anyway, even when I am healthy but that's also a consideration if you normally do).
