Just something I thought I would share

Postby Tman007 » Thu Oct 09, 2014 10:06 pm

I thought I would share my sweet potato mix. I cook a sweet potato, then I cut up fresh green beans, broccoli, carrots. I grind up the veggies and mix them in with the sweet potato. The sweet potato I peel after I cook it. The veggies stick to the sweet potato so when my flock eats the mix they get the veggies too. And at the end you can see Amos with his face right in the mix. LOL.

Looks great! I make something similar for Chubby, although I add jalapenos to the mix. :) Looks like your parrot really enjoyed it!

I have heard so many different things about what vegetables are good for parrots that I have become afraid of feeding my little guy most of them. Why are sweet potatoes or yams safe when cooked but not raw? My conure is so tiny I'm afraid if I feed the wrong thing he will suffer from it. I also have read some people putting honey in the mix, but others say honey is an absolute no. Also I have heard that green beans because they are stringy like celery should not be fed to parrots. And I have heard that corn is also a no no except for maybe just a tiny amount. Can someone clarify to me the truths? :)

Also what about tiny potatoes that are different colors called Fingerlings? Can they be fed if cooked? Has anyone heard of them? My husband buys them.

Cooked vs raw is a matter of preference-the bird's, that it. My bird used to like her carrots grated raw, but now she seems to like them as cooked slices. Yams she has never liked raw, so I cook them for her too. She also loves raw peapods. Corn on the cob is slightly cooked, but the dried ones from the pet store are a toy-she removes the kernels but doesn't eat them.

Try serving different preparations to see what your bird likes.

Awwww, what a cutie! I have a male peachfront, VERY similar to the halfmoon only the tiniest bit larger and with a black beak (his name is Pablo). As to veggies, they are pretty much all safe except for avocado and onions. Some can be given either way, some need to be cooked (potatoes, asparagus, yucca, etc). I always cook sweet potatoes, pumpkins and the round squashes (winter, butternut, spaghetti, hubbard, turban, etc -I have a medium sugar pumpkin cooking in the microwave right now for their breakfast) but they get raw yellow and green zucchini, red radishes, grape tomatoes, green/yellow/orange/red peppers, fennel root, carrots, beets (they eat them cooked, too), celery, cucumbers, endives (not too often, they are expensive and I have a lot of parrots), French/snap beans, sugar snaps and snow peas, etc. Yes, potatoes are OK as long as they are cooked (mine like the little red ones boiled, sliced and with a drizzle of olive oil and some oregano on them). They also love fresh corn on the cob (shuck, boil for 2 minutes, put in cold water and cut in 1 in slices).

Veggies and fruits are healthy for them as well as leafy greens and cruciferous (cabbage family) but I don't give mine any spinach or collard greens and very little cauliflower (too high in oxalates and purines).

I keep my onions and potatoes in a lower cabinet but keep the door closed because the dogs steal them to play ball (as if I am not tripping over all their toys). One time I was in such a hurry that I forgot to close the door. The dogs squealed on Myrtle who was in their and took a bite out of each one. I don't think she swallowed any. I can't give the dogs biscuts until Myrtle puts herself to bed. She carries them around and chews them up and spits them out every where.

The funniest thing Myrtle ever bit was a mango. I caught her at it but she could not get away. Her beak was stuck and the mango was too big for her to lift.

What I have done with the birds is give them fresh or thawed frozen. Rambo and Myrtle prefer raw but the Tiels can only eat cooked or thawed carrots and sweet potato. I string the celery before I give it. I only wash their vegetables as I would for humans and only cook the ones that are too hard for the Tiels and Tweetle to bite. I don't mix it all up. I have a feeding platform and just keep changing up plates through out the day as I use other veggies.
