I don't like mite spray, I use ivermectin in their water, instead. When you use mite spray, you can't tell exactly how much you are exposing the bird to and, as the treatment for mites needs to be done once a week for three weeks in a row (mites usually have a 21 days life cycle from egg to adult and eggs again), you can end up poisoning your bird. But I doubt the bird died because of mites unless they were air sac mites in which case the spray is useless. He most likely died because of the paraffin oil you put on him so, if I were you, I would stop improvising with treatments that can cause more harm than good.
