Gone but never forgotten ;(

Postby Tiellove » Sat Oct 25, 2014 1:06 pm

In my previous post, Mango seemed to have a brown coloration on his head feathers, and Pajarita helped me by suggesting remedies I could use. But when coming back from the store, my mom informed me that Mango had died. This moment ruined my weekend and was the most painful thing I have ever experienced. I would just like to know how to avoid this type of situation again. I have sprayed the birds with mite spray, thoroughly cleaned their cage, and am now working on giving them a bath and putting them in quarantine until I am completely sure that they are not infested with mites.

I don't like mite spray, I use ivermectin in their water, instead. When you use mite spray, you can't tell exactly how much you are exposing the bird to and, as the treatment for mites needs to be done once a week for three weeks in a row (mites usually have a 21 days life cycle from egg to adult and eggs again), you can end up poisoning your bird. But I doubt the bird died because of mites unless they were air sac mites in which case the spray is useless. He most likely died because of the paraffin oil you put on him so, if I were you, I would stop improvising with treatments that can cause more harm than good.
