Veggies in cage

Postby LJ4RockPebbler » Mon Nov 03, 2014 12:10 pm

I chop up a mix of veggies and fruits for my girl first thing in the morning which she doesnt always eat right away. How long can that mix be kept in her cage?

I had a hard time right at first because the greens would wilt and the fruit would oxidize pretty quickly so I was running myself ragged with replacing it and it didn't help either my pocketbook nor my frame of mind with all of the waste. I ended up just gritting my teeth and leaving it in the cage and they still nibbled on it all day long, so that is what I do is leave it all day unless it is very hot in which case I change it out in about 4 to 5 hours. I have not had any problems with this schedule.

If you mixed cooked whole grains with the veggies, she would eat them all the time but, in any case, you can leave them there all day long. People talk about food 'spoiling' in a couple of hours but, in truth, they don't know what they are talking about because, for one thing, nothing on this earth rots in a couple of hours! And, even if it did, it would not harm the birds - there are birds that actually wait until the fruit begins to rot before they eat it (look up drunken parrot season in Australia and you'll see).

I put the fresh food out early in the morning and take it out in the evening, before I give them their seed dinner. And, you know what? Sometimes I miss a piece of fruit or something that fell on the floor (I sweep in the evening but not as thoroughly as I do in the morning) and, on a few occasions, I would see them eating that old, dried up piece of fruit the following morning! So, as you can see, they don't seem to mind at all.
