Diet

Postby jen.inverness » Mon Nov 24, 2014 10:01 am

Hi everyone.

I only got my GCC last Thursday so it's all new for it and myself - it's named Tuki (Hebrew for parrot) but gender unknown

I feed in the morning around 7am before I go to work, then around 1pm when I'm in between shifts, and then again around 7pm.
At the moment I am mixing raw/cooked cabbage and/or green beans, tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, salad leaves, sprouts, but also banana, apple, pears, the occasional small bit of clementine.

I currently use a bowl measuring 3.5x3x2in but have ordered a slightly bigger one which I can hang inside the cage.
I sprinkle egg food 3x a week and seed mix daily on top of it.

My question is if it is sufficient to feed this portion of food three times a day?
It always has pellets available.

I appreciate hearing about your routine / food mixes. Many thanks.

Is this a baby, a juvenile or an adult? Because age makes a big difference in what and how often they should eat. As a bit of info, my GCC has gloop, one LARGE portion of fruit, a small one of veggie (unless it's something they -her husband is a peachfronted- love like corn on the cob, grape tomatoes, red/yellow/orange pepper, celery or some type of squash or pumpkin) and one piece of leafy green (they like the stalk better so, if I give them romaine, I make sure it's the 'bottom' part of the leaf) or cruciform (they love raw broccoli) for breakfast and all day picking (birds don't eat lunch) and, in the evening, they get a tablespoon of a budgie mix. Once a week, they get 1.5 dosage of the daily recommended one of a multivitamin/mineral supplement.

You can't feed cabbage every day, all cabbages are high in oxalic acid, which inhibits calcium absorption so, although you can feed it every now and then, it should never be every single day. You are also not feeding enough betacarotene (carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, etc). And I don't feed sprouts all year round, either, they are strictly breeding season food or any egg food ever (well, I do feed it to the canaries that are breeding or raising babies but never to the parrots).
