Random question about mites in birds

Postby paper_lantern » Wed Dec 03, 2014 7:53 pm

There's no real reason for this question other than pure curiosity.

I saw a picture of a budgie with scaly face mites. I was wondering how exactly parrots even catch mites? Is it due to unclean conditions? Does it only infect birds who go outdoors such as aviary birds? Can it just appear out of the blue? Seems like I only see pictures of budgies and cockatiels with these infections, do they infect other parrots too?

I've never actually seen a bird with mites in person, so I got really curious after seeing the picture on a forum I was perusing.
