If this is true and they use infrasound to hear storms of this type, I bet that they could use the same thing to detect earthquakes before they occur. The early stages of slippage that must happen prior to the plates shifting would have to make some sort of infrasound noise.
Anyway that is so-o-o cool !!

I am always in awe of how incredibly fascinating birds are and the more we learn about them, the more I am in awe!

I guess their eyes are not their best sense,,, Pod always perks up at noises I cannot hear...like a dog does... I love the wild...and their abilities...

No, actually, their most developed sense is vision. Birds are, by far, the most vision-oriented of ALL the vertebrate species (they not only see better, they also see farther, more colors and their brains can understand what they see much more accurately and faster than mammals). Hearing comes right after and very close, with smell and touch after them.

Current earthquake theory says the land away from the fault is slipping more or less constantly while the fault is stuck until it builds enough pressure to unstick. Birds don't seem to notice the constant slippage (but horses do-California horses get nervous when they leave eathquake country because the ground is too still).

Birds do sense the beginning of earthquakes before we do, though. They sometimes get very quiet just before shaking starts, and then take off. Staying in the air for the few minutes of shaking is safer than being perched.

Some quakes make low groaning sounds that even dull-eared people can hear.

Here in the north western part of North Carolina, we don't get any large quake like in CA., I know because I have been through a few in LA, Palm Springs and in Santa Barbara and Carpenteria, but we do sometime get a small jolt which sometimes sound like someone fired a shotgun.

Rambo can identify vehicles when he is in the opposite side of the house. When my friend Harold came over I would hear Rambo say "Harold is here". Then he would climb down and run to the door.

I recall learning this in elementary school before learning what to do during a tornado drill for the first time. We're near tornado areas but have never had any go through where we live, thankfully.
