Convert half a room into an aviary?

Postby JaydeParrot » Thu Jan 08, 2015 7:05 pm

In a few months I'm going to have to permanently move my bird's into my bedroom, they used to live in the living room but due to circumstances that's no longer an option. As the bedroom is fairly big, I wondered whether I could put a huge piece of metal fencing across the room, somehow nail it to the floor, ceiling and walls (so the birds can't get out), put a door in for myself so I could get in and also keep their cage inside the 'aviary' so that they'd sort of have their house (cage) and then a huge back and front yard (aviary) to play in.

Trouble is, I'm really not to sure where to get me the correctmetal fencing which is non-toxic and the right bar spacing for sennies. Any ideas on what kind of fencing I should be looking for? E.g.- non galvanized stainless steel.

Also, I'm happy for any pros and cons people can think for this idea, my main want was to have an area where the bird cage could always be open and they could explore without hurting themselves. Admittedly I could just leave the cage open in the room but I'd be concerned leaving them alone in the room, incase they got hurt or stuck in the furniture.

I was looking into stainless steel or aluminum hardware cloth about a month or two ago. Let me have a day or two and I will get back to you with links to what I found as I will have to find it again.

I thought of that for my sunroom but when I started pricing materials it was too high. The room is 10 X 12 and half would have been great. Instead I bought 2 more flight cages at $104 each from Foster and Smith. My son is suppose to come Friday to help me put it together. I could probably do it but I will let him.
If I attach them in a line it will give my cockatiels a 9 foot flight cage. I'll let you know if it works.

I have a friend in California that did just that only it was the dining room/living room area that he split in two, making the dining room into a bird room. I saw it when I went to pick up Zoey, my female Senegal (she used to belong to him but was too aggressive to his wife), and was very impressed with it. He made panels with wood frames that he covered with stainless steel sheets on the bird side, the wood frames have stainless steel wire mesh, he covered the parquet floor with linoleum, put full spectrum lights on the ceiling fixture (there is a window on one wall) and hanged branches horizontally from the ceiling, making kind of like a canope for the birds to perch on (the cages are under this canopy). It's a small area but it's perfectly functional, the space is well utilized and the birds can be left with the cage doors open all day long so it works great! I tried to find the picture he posted on his Facebook page of this 'branch canopy' he added recently but he must have deleted it because it wasn't there.

Anyone know where to buy parrot safe aviary building material? I've looked around hardware stores at different types of fencing but am not sure which are parrot safe, I've asked the shop assistants but just recieve the same perplexed looks and the advise to just 'buy a bigger cage'. There is a website called jungle gold but the smallest bar spacing for their aviaries they sell is 3/4 which I'm told it too big for a Senegal Parrot.

So, does anyone know where I could buy non-toxic parrot safe fencing to make an indoor aviary for a Senegal Parrot?

Thanks.

You have to go online, stores don't carry (yet, I hope it will change in the future) stainless steel chainlink but you can find it online in different gauges. I have a friend who closed up her entire porch so her macaws could go there in the summer and she imported a whole roll from China (but it did not work out because the neighbors complained to the police about the birds calls -she lives in NYC- and she couldn't use it after all)
