Can parrots eat drop scones?

Postby JaydeParrot » Mon Jan 19, 2015 3:54 pm

I'm very fond of drop scones and wondered whether it would be safe to feed my Sennies some?

You add one egg, some self raising flour, enough semi skimmed milk so that it's not too thick, not too gloopy, and plenty of raisins.

Put a small amount of sunflower oil in a pan, scoop out a tablespoonfull of the mixture and drop it onto the pan, turning it occasionally like a small biscuit sized pancake to make it cooked inside and outside. (tastes great with butter and jam- but not for parrots though, :)).

Anyways, minus the butter and jam, do you think that it would be ok to feed Sennies the occasional drop scone? I figure it would be similar to 'birdie bread', or not?

Also is it ok to feed birds figs or lychees?

Thanks.

They might question the kind of flour you use.
I never give raisins or any other dry fruit. It is natural but a consentrated sugar.
I wish they would eat figs. I have two fig trees and they won't touch them.

What kind of flour would you use, they could have drop scones without the raisins...

You sure are lucky having fig trees, I don't think they don't grow over here so I have to wait for them to be imported, :).

Pajarita is better than I am at this although I am working very hard on it. I am not sure about the flour, I am more concerned about the milk as birds can't digest it.
Birds can eat figs and as far as I am aware of they are very good for them.
I am not certain that I would want to risk feeding my bird this lychee fruit, after reading the Wikipedia entry about this fruit, I am pretty certain that I don't want it. It is attributed to be the cause of a form of encephalitis in China, although my concern is more in line with the amount of cyanide related compounds in it.

The problem is the self-rising flour because they are always made with the 'regular' kind of baking powder in them which is made with aluminum (bad for them) but, if you got the regular flour (I don't feed white flour to mine but I guess that as long as you get the unbleached one, a tiny little bit of a sconce -I love them too!- once in a blue moon should be OK) and add baking powder without aluminum (you have to look for it but it's now carried in most supermarkets) and use lactose-free milk (I use it not only for myself but also for my cats and dogs), it should be OK for them to get a tiny bit as a very special treat (and you can put a drop of honey on it -they should LOVE that!)
