Toe injury

Postby macowaco » Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:27 pm

Hello everyone,

I'm new as a user to the forum but have checked in here every now and than before.
Long story short my little boy Niko recently had a mood change. We didn't suspect anything at first since my girlfriend usually checks up on him and his body. Its been a few days now and he won't let us approach him anymore so we tried to examine him earlier and saw something that looks possibly like a broken claw.

After watching him for a while he's been keeping that leg tucked up most of the time and when we try to touch it he tries to bite us or scream so it must be in pain. We're planning on taking him to the vet to get it looked at but any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance everyone

My first thought is, you don't want to know my first thoughts. Now on to bigger and better things, it appears that you have stringy things in his gage, but the picture is close in on the bird so I can't be certain, could you give a shot or two of his cage as finding and removing possible causes of this injury seems to me to be the next logical step.
I would get this bird to the vet as soon as their door is open, as the injury that you are seeing is probably the very least of it and the major damage is further up the leg. So when the vet finishes everything else that he must do to repair this and is making out the prescriptions make sure he give you pain meds for the bird.

Awww, poor baby, yes, it does look as if he got it snagged on something, he pulled and broke the nail. And Wolf is correct in that, most likely, he sprained something in the process because birds hardly ever favor a foot because of a broken nail - I mean, people cut their claws too short and make them bleed all the time and they don't really favor the foot more than a few hours or day so there must be something else bothering him for it to last days and not allow you to touch him.

Please look at all the places where he perches and remove anything that might cause his claws to get 'snagged'. But don't feel too bad about it... with birds, it's live and learn all the time and for the rest of the bird's life. I've been keeping canaries for more than 50 years and parrots for more than 20 and I am still learning new things every day :)

Thank you for the replies and the advice.

As suggested we checked around the cage and cleared up anything that could possibly get him snagged.
My girlfriend also took him to the vet today and got an exam and his claw trimmed. He's all patched up now and feeling better. Took a nap when he got home and now hes all lively again :D :irn:

Thanks again for all the assistance.
