Possible Lipoma in Quaker

Postby Fidget » Sat Feb 21, 2015 9:00 am

All of my feathered friends made a trip to the vet this week. Fortunately, everyone's test came back within good limits. I had CBCs, chem profiles, bile acids, pssitacosis, and fecal smears done. (Wolf, I did mention PBFD to him, especially concerning my Rosella, and he said he could test for it but it would be "wasted" money; due to the fact of her age, etc).

One unusual thing was found. My Quaker has a lump slightly above her thigh under her wing. He thought it might be an "out of place" fat deposit, such as a lipoma or liposarcoma. We had a cytology done on it, and it came back as just fat. This indicates a lipoma or liposarcoma. He suggested we go with a lipoma, and just try to reduce fat in the diet and increase exercise and have it checked in a month. He suggested this route because 1) liposarcomas aren't *that* common, 2) the quaker had a very very poor diet and no exercise at her prior home and I haven't had her that long for diet alone to make a difference, 3) removal is invasive and could be dangerous. The wings are clipped on her, so the exercises we'll start are getting her to flap ger wings around the house on my hand.

So my question to you all, has anyone ever dealt with a lipoma in one of their birds? What treatment plan did you go with? Has anyone dealt with a liposarcoma (the journal articles I've read make it sound... bad/deadly)? Are there modifications/additions to her "gloop" I should make?

Thanks for any insight you guys might have! I appreciate your time!

My biggest concern with your Rosella, which came from the article, was not so much that she might have this herself, but that she might be a vector to the others. I am still reading and rereading the paper that the article was based on, but it definitely paints a much different picture than the article did.
Since I have not had the problem that your Quaker has I don't think I can help much there as you already have anything that I am likely to dig up at this time.

Like I said, unless the rosella caught it in the petstore, the chances of her having PBFD are super slim to none.

Don't worry about the fatty cyst, just watch it periodically (once a month is fine) to see if it grows and, if it does and it happens fast, have it removed and biopsied - nothing else you can do and making yourself crazy with 'what ifs' is not going to help anything. It might not go away but as long as it doesn't grow, it's fine. Quakers are hardy, hardy, hardy birds. Of course, the real hardy ones are the wild ones because captive bred is always genetically inferior to wild populations but even the captive bred are excellent eaters, good flier, good bathers, etc. so concentrate on diet, solar schedule, flight and stress reduction and she'll be fine.

Wolf- yes, the actual journal article and the later "for the public" write ups are much different.
I've found several articles in avian journals/veterinary journals that suggest what my vet did; I was just looking for experience. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Pajarita- I assumed that was what I should do. She does eat decently, working on increasing her likes and such. Doing my best with all the others too. So hopefully all will be well. Thanks!
