Injured Foot?

Postby paleandgreen » Wed Feb 25, 2015 2:24 am

Hi, I'd just like to ask if any how seen these symptoms on their parrot before. I plan on going to the vet but I'd like to know what it may be before I since the clinic is 2 hours away and their avian vet is very busy so it is hard to get a spot to see him. Thanks in advance.

I came home today to find my Ekki very distressed. At one point he went into his cage and grabbed onto one of the bars and tried to flip his head through his legs. Since that I took him out of his cage onto his play perches and I have noticed that he was unusually lifting his left foot up as if it hurt. Whenever he'd put it down he'd toe tap and flip his wing with that action. At first whenever he'd tap his toes he'd go to bite his foot. (I'm not to sure if it is a result of him trying to flip himself, if it he injured himself during the day or possibly a sign of toe tapping and wing flipping syndrome). I've given him some Bach Rescue Remedies to help distress him, which has helped!

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their feathered friends before? Any tips or helpful advice would be much appreciated! Thank you.

I have not seen any behaviors like this in any of my birds although I don't have any ekkies either. I would suggest you let your vet evaluate this and advise you accordingly. I am concerned about the use of Bachs Rescue Remedy as it appears that the main two ingredients are distilled water and alcohol in the form of brandy. Alcohol is not good for your bird. Toe tapping and wing flicking are involuntary movements (like a tick) but your bird seems to be doing them for a specific reason. Have you looked at his foot closely? Because it sounds as if he has something there that bothers him (his 'chewing' the foot)... could he have a splinter, a cut, a small booboo? Could he have pulled/broken one is his nails? Could there be a thread wrapped around a toe? Is the sole evenly colored? Is there any redness, discoloration or swelling?

And, yes, please, don't ever use products meant for mammals on birds. I know that lots of people on the internet say it's OK but they are not.

Thank you Pajarita and Wolf!
He's much better today and we have an appointment for the vet booked in tomorrow. He still seems to be tapping his toe, and the underside is slightly swollen, however there are no physical signs of injury or problem.
In regards to the Bach Flowers, it was actually recommend for use by this avian vet, however I only put one drop into a water bowl and strongly dilute it, also it's the alcohol-free type meant for use on pets. But thank you for the word, I will look into it. :)

With the underside swollen, I am thinking either the beginnings of bumblefoot or he has lost his balance and bruised the toe while grabbing to catch himself. May I inquire as to what you are using for perches for him and how big around are they?
