Strange behavior: tail and rump raised up, front lowered

My Crimson Belly just came back from being boarded and started doing something I've never seen him do before. He raises his rump and tail high up while crouching his front half down. He doesn't do it out of his cage and it's not too frequent but I noticed last time he did it his vent area was exposed and was contracting quickly. Is this the infamous "masterbation" that people discuss? He only does it when he's in his cage on a certain perch. Anyone seen this behavior before? He has his first full physical next week so maybe the vet can shed some light on the subject.

No, that's not masturbation, it's a sexual or breeding behavior but not masturbation. Males masturbate by rubbing their vent sideways against an object. What you describe is called 'presenting' and it's done by females.
