Sprouting Mix Help!

Postby Cresseliaaaa » Sun Mar 22, 2015 1:10 am

Hey fellow community!
I apologise for my absence as I've been busy at work and had family issues of late.

I've been recently looking at sprout mixes for my baby boy and Ive found two types that interest me but I just wanted verification that it's healthy for my boy to have every day (mostly).
I'd take out sunflower seeds and chickpeas etc but here's the ingredients:

http://sproutpeople.org/mid-bird-sprout-mix/
http://sproutpeople.org/dr-bird-sprout-mix/

I've been away for a little bit looking after a friend in Brisbane too, so dad was in charge of him for a bit.
He created and fed him a mix of roughly chopped: walnuts, cashews, Brazil nuts, almonds, goji berries, shredded coconut, oats, millet, pellets and cranberries/sultanas.
I didn't agree with the over use of nuts everyday but I didn't know til I came back.

He also got and still gets corn on cobs, carrot, celery, salad mix, green beans, lettuce, bokchoi, snap peas, and one piece of fruit like a section of Apple, or a skewer of a mix of blueberries, raspberries, grapes or blackberries
Fruit and veggies are randomly selected every day so he wouldn't get the same thing every day.

Much appreciated parrot family ((:

I thought about leaving this one alone and waiting to see what Pajarita had to say about it. But, obviously, I ended up deciding to answer and just let her correct me if I am in error, It helps me to learn.
I don't know if you can get this or not, but I would get TOPS All in One Seed Mix and sprout this mix as it is totally organic. And also probably some chia seeds as well.
I don't think sprouts are a bad thing at this time of the year, but I would not give them on a regular basis all year long. In the wild they would not get them all year long and I can't help but think that there is a goo reason for this or at least that their body is not designed to have them year round. I also agree with you that your father went a bit overboard with the nuts.
We humans fall prey to our own thought rather easily and tend to think that if a little is good then more is better, but this is not right, more is not always better and can have serious consequences.
I would also eliminate any of the iceburg lettuce as it does not provide any real nutritional value for the bird. It is the one that grows in a round ball or head.

Maybe the OP did not mean Iceberg and, in reality, although it is true that, compared to other lettuces, the Iceberg is lower in nutrition, it's not as if it was cardboard, either. It does have nice fiber content and lots of water so, every now and then, if you have nothing else, it's not bad.

I don't actually sprout. I give the passerines what is called soaked seed during breeding season but the parrots get organic sprouts I buy in Whole Foods (also during breeding season, only).

He doesn't really eat the lettuce, just likes to shred it really haha.
Are the ones on that website good though? When should I feed him the sprouts then?
What can I give him for a stable diet as well because at the moment he's on pellets which he only eats after he's destroyed his greens.
Can he also have this nut mix my dad has made once a week or every two weeks with his pellets or is that still bad for his health?

Thanks for your time guys.

I don't see anything wrong with either sprouting mix from the web site you posted. That being said, I don't sprout seeds for my birds, but if I did I would only feed them during breeding season which is the time that the bird would have them in its natural habitat.
No I would not use the mix that your father made as it is much too rich for the bird especially since you feed pellets. Which I do not feed. Pellets are convenient to use but I do not like them and for that reason I cook for my birds and feel that my birds receive a much better diet as a result of this choice. Pellets are designed to be supplemented with only fresh raw vegetables, fruit and leafy greens.

The thing with pellets, seeds, nuts, nutriberries, nutricakes, etc is that they are all sources of high protein so, if you give one, you should not give the other and none should be free-fed BUT you can give him the nuts instead of the pellets every now and then and you can use them as treats or training rewards. Personally, if I could afford it (I have a lot of birds), I would feed all my large and medium size birds tree nuts for dinner instead of seeds but, as it is, the large and medium species get them as a supplement to their seed mix.
