Seeds

Postby Saber » Mon Mar 23, 2015 8:17 pm

I'm going to work in some seeds to Scootys diet (previously was Harrison's pellets and various fruits, veggies, nuts). From what I'm reading here a few of you buy your seeds and them mix them up how you like.

-Where would you get the seeds?

-Does anyone have some suggestions on types of seeds for a CAG? Or I can buy the premixed bags I suppose but have no idea what a good brand is.

I've read books and magazines and websites but they are always slanted. I need opinions from those of us that actually use seeds and can attest the the benefits.

Scooty thanks you :gray:

I recommend TOPS all in One Seed mix, I order it from Windy City Parrots.com in Chicago. You can get some individual seeds from Drs. Foster and Smith.com.

Awesome! Thanks Wolf :) I had no idea that site even existed. I'm glad it's a slow day at work today...I'm going to see what else is on there lol. AND I got paid yesterday...probably not the best combo (money and a new website for Scooty to check out lol)

I mix ABBA 1600 C (cockatiel mix) with 1200 (small psittacine/lovebird mix) in equal parts. Tops all in one has a lot of rye and my birds don't like it. And it might be too low in protein for a gray... I couldn't find the nutritional values on the Top site so I don't have any figures but the main ingredient is barley and, as Tops only uses human grade ingredients, I would assume it's two-row and not six-row barley (the one used for animal feed and the one that has a higher protein content) so it should be around 7 to 9% and that's way too low for a gray - they need higher protein. But, if you want to feed it, you could supplement it with nuts to make up for the low protein.
