Postby LJ4RockPebbler » Wed Mar 25, 2015 9:46 pm

Dried fruits like cranberries ok for these birds? I read because I read that the sulfides and sulphates can make them toxic to birds.....any truth? Also, can anyone send me a link I can keep on me at all times that way I know what I can or cannot buy for my bird....thanks

Sulfides and sulfates are indeed toxic to your bird. Exactly what are you wanting from the link or links?

There is naturally dried fruit (figs, dates, raisins, currants, prunes, sun-dried tomatoes) and then there is fruit that has been dried AND treated with sulfites to retain color and texture (the greatest majority of packaged fruits in the supermarket like apricots, apples, etc) and then there is fruit that has been dried with sugar (pineapple bits, papaya, cranberries, etc) but the good news is that, by law, they have to list this on the ingredient list so all you have to do is look at the label. There are also sources of fruit that would normally be treated with sulfites or sugar but that is not (http://www.barryfarm.com/dried_fruit.htm)

Dumb question yet I'm still not sure, can these toxic ingredients be found in the organic dried fruit? The dried cranberries my guy gets are all organic.

I can't say for sure without knowing the brand and pkg. size, but organically grown does not mean that it is processed organically or even packaged organically. You really have to look at the package labeling and at the fruit itself. There is normally a big difference in how the fruit looks when it has the chemicals and when they don't.

I don't give them died fruit because of the consintrated sugar.

Look at the label where they list the ingredients, it needs to say just the name of the fruit and nothing else.
