Food Ideas For Jenday Conure

Postby Phoenix15 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:27 am

Hi, we rehomed a Jenday 3 weeks ago, we are told shes 2yrs old she was feed seeds all the time (free feeding) mainly sunflower seeds which I've read on here are better given as treats. I've been trying her on veg and fruit some days she'll eat it other days she won't. I eat infront of her at every meal and let her sit with me to see if she'll pick at what Im eating. If she does have some fruit or veg I have to hand it to her and its eaither grapes, raisins or carrots. Anyone have any advise on getting her off the seeds. Thanks

Indeed! Switch your bird to gloop. Start off with just the whole grains cooked al dente or about half cooked. You want them to be kind of soft on the outside and firm on the inside. When you first start offering the bird this mix some of her seed mix in with it and then gradually reduce the amount of seeds in it and then start adding one vegetable at a time to it until she eats the gloop with all of its ingredients. And give her the seeds only in the evenings for dinner, but remove them when she goes to bed for the night. Also continue to offer her unseasoned foods when you eat, preferably raw fruits and veggies.

Just two more things to add to Wolf's post:
1) only start adding the veggies when you see the bird is actually eating the cooked whole grains (you will see empty 'skins'), add one veggie at a time but start with fresh corn (they all love it) and add another veggie (or two, I usually add peas and carrots at this point) when you see her eating the fresh corn without a problem.
2) in the morning, give her the raw produce first and wait, at least, one hour before giving her the gloop so she will eat her roughage (they start out of sheer hunger but then continue because they learn to like it).

I remember a post somewhere from I think Pajarita saying you could add a little garlic and virgin olive oil for flavor to the Kashi Pilaf. I made a bag (1 bag, not the box 3 bags), and added about one and one half table spoons chopped garlic (not cloves but real garlic in small jar In oil), and about 2 table spoons extra virgin olive oil. I ended up not using the batch of Pilaf because I was afraid I used too much garlic, so I made more using none. I still have the garlic batch. I PM''d Pajarita, but I guess my mssgs were not getting thru. I did not want to accidently poison Bean w/garlic. What is the proper amount of garlic. Bean is getting picky with the gloop. Thanks.

Phoenix15, if it helps, I just went thru what you are with Bean in the last 45 days. My BFA is very sick with Fatty Liver Disease. It was VERY slow going in the beginning. Bean was eating only his Nutriberries at dinner those days, holding out for his junk food. I thought Bean would not eat the new diet, but on like the 3rd or 4th day, when I was freaking out, I started to see a few hulls of the grains in the bowl, just a few. Like maybe he ate a few just to check them out, then all of the sudden, I saw it plastered to his beak, don't give up! When you see him eating the one veggie that's in there with the grains,(for me it was beans and beets because he liked beets), then add a new veggie after a few days. .
