Sick Senegal Parrot medical mystery

Postby vwbug2010 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 3:00 pm

Hi there folks this is my first post.

I am having real problems I own two senegals and two conures.

One of our senegal parrots Ringo has developed a problem where he drinks lots of water and his chest is soaked - he then pees water out like a water pistol - this problem has been going on for some time - months.

Anyway took him to the vets he has had a blood test which showed a lower white blood count 2.7 should be in range of 5.6 to 14.0

Anyway he is now on pellet food harrisons - another blood test a few weeks ago shows a very low white count of 0.2. Based on this he is now on an anti fungal and antibiotics - he is starting to seem a bit more active and playful and there is not quite so many watery droppings.

Anyone got any ideas whats wrong with him? He has just been tested for the chlamydia virus - but I get the impression the vets are a bit puzzled by this. We are still awaiting these results. Could it be disease ? Sugar reading came back normal - CT scan on kidneys also seemed ok - he is only a year old so only a young bird.

Would it be worth me seeking a second opinion to another vets perhaps?

Pajarita is the most experienced with these things that I am aware of and will give her opinion when she next logs on and sees this. She takes in birds that have problems an this has led to her having a more extensive knowledge than most of the rest of us.
In the meantime, since what affects one of your birds will affect all of your birds, what and when are you feeding your birds? Are they clipped? How much out of cage time do they have? When do they get up and go to bed?

Has he been tested for metal poisoning? What was he prescribed after the first blood test? (I am asking because the second test looks worse than the first one). Are you giving him any supplements? Any people food at all? What does he eat aside from pellets? (not what you give him but what he really eats)

Hi guys thanks for your reply it's very frustrating and I feel a bit helpless about the situation

I feed the birds twice a day I have switched over to Harrison's high potency pellets, they also gave some veg green beans and banana. The other birds seem fine even the other Senegal which is in the same cage. We could separate them but it did seem to stress him out more so put him back in the same cage.they are not clipped and spend quite a bit of time with me inside but I also have a small avairy which they sometimes go in to slack up the sun. They are normally up at 8

He has not been tested for metal poisoning yet. He was not prescribed any mess after the first test. No supplements or human food but is on the Harrison's high potency. Fruit and green beans he likes. I thought maybe diabetes but not so sure now it could be a number of things but the wet neck and clear water pee is quite consistent. Combined with some thick droppings occasionally. Seems odd about the very low white blood count. He is now on bay trial the antibiotic twice a day some improvement on his energy seems quite plucky but still the same symptoms.
