Can parrots eat...

Postby Paul » Fri Apr 24, 2015 11:04 pm

Hey all,
I thought it would be a good idea to start this topic as I am forever searching information on Google and other sources regarding what is safe for my bird to eat.
Every once in a while I am unable to find an answer.
One example of this is Licorice Root.

I'm sure this would be fine but as I can't find any solid information online about it, I'm reluctant to let my bird have it.
I do think it would make a great tasty treat/chew toy for her though, so if anybody knows if licorice root is safe for parrots, please let me know!

Hmmm, this is not something normally consumed in USA so I don't really have any personal experience with it. The FDA says that licorice products (doesn't mention eating the root by itself) are safe as long as they are not consumed in excess but I don't know how much of a root is too much and how much is considered safe. I give my birds bulb fennel (sometimes the supermarkets label it anise root but it's not really anise) which has a licorice taste although the compounds that make it are different.

Many years ago when I was first diagnose with auto immune, my doctor told me not to eat black licorice. It was so long ago that I don't remember why but I still don't eat black licorice. It was when my liver was under attack.

Licorice Root just looks like a little twig but it sweet when you chew on it and has a kinda licorice taste. I'll put a picture of it up in case anyone didn't know what I meant.
I am pretty sure it would be fine but I wanna be totally sure before I let my bird have it.
She loves chewing wooden pegs (clothespins) so this would be like a peg that tastes good too lol.
