Indian Ringneck with sprained leg

Postby emilyringneck » Tue May 12, 2015 12:44 pm

Hi all, I am new to this forum, and I look forward to hearing advice from fellow bird owners! My one year old male Indian Ringneck was not acting normal a couple days ago, and he was favoring his left leg. I took him to an avian vet yesterday and she found bruising on his hip area and told me that he didn't seem to have any broken bones. She said it was probably a sprain and gave him a cortisone injection. My question now is about his "good" leg. The foot that he is using to stand now seems different to me. One toe is pointing outward quite a bit more than usual. Is that because he is bearing all weight on that foot?
He doesn't seem to mind me touching and bending it, but it just looks odd to me. Thanks! :irn:

Without pictures to go by, there is little that I can say about the good leg. Did you determine the cause of the injury to the birds other leg? It sounds like it may have gotten hung up in some fabric strings, rope or twine fibers or even a chain and twisted the leg while attempting to free itself.

Avian vets are too fast to give injections, something I don't agree with unless it's absolutely necessary as, with birds, shots destroy way too much muscle tissue. And, in this case, the bird would have been much better off if the vet had prescribed metacam because it doesn't only reduce inflammation, it also takes care of the pain which cortisone does not do.

Have you looked at the bottom of the foot? If not, please do and see if you can see a spot where the color is not the same or is too 'smooth'. But Wolf is right, a couple of pictures would help a lot.
