Hi.

So I got these baby lovebirds from a friend cause I have experience handfeeding animals but I never seen lovebirds with skin showing like this before. Are they ill from the skin?
Or is this normal cause they are just growing their wings?

I think they are about 2-3 weeks old, not sure.
Thanks.

Well, experience handfeeding 'animals' is only good with the animals you have experience with because birds are not like kittens or puppies. The danger with puppies and kittens is evacuation so they don't die that easily while baby birds aspirate and drop dead in your hand if you don't know what you are doing - and that's not even going into sour or slow crop, another common problem when the person who handsfeed does not have enough experience.

These birds should be with their parents, they are too young to be separated from them and lovies don't really benefit much from imprinting to humans. Hatchlings do grow their feathers in tracks and some skin does show but these have too much skin showing which tells me the parents must have been pecking them (the bald spots on the back of their heads and backs are dead giveaways), an indication of very poor husbandry on the part of the breeder which could mean health consequences for the rest of their lives.

I hope you have all the implements you need: digital scale to determine whether they are gaining enough and the amount they should be fed on a daily basis, pipettes or syringes, good formula, thermometer (formula needs to be at exact temperature throughout or you can burn the crop or give them a fungal infection in it), heating pad or brooder, etc.

They are so cute but are terribly scared or cold. If they are warm enough and their bellies are full they will sit like little Buda's. They are huddled in the corner and need more help.

Awww~ . I always thought they look like they are sitting up ready for high tea or something lol. It's nice to know it's because they are wram and tummies full :3

That pic was in the nesting box, their parents didn't want them anymore and the poor things were really bad. Now they are nice and wram, growing their feathers back, and eating well :3

there is a experienced beader lady in a pet store near me who offered to help if I need any. seemed really happy when I asked her lots of things then recapping everything I knew just to make sure. My friend (owner of the parent lovebirds) also offered his help if I needed any, after his out of work of course lol
