Gloop vs Circus Diet

Postby Tiana » Fri May 22, 2015 11:57 am

Hi, I've been feeding the Circus Diet to my cockatiel and budgie, but on here I've read a lot about gloop. If there is difference, is gloop better? Or are they different words for the same thing?

Also I read that cockatiels and parakeets actually prefer dry food based on their home climate. Any thoughts on this?

I would say that author was mistaken based on this fact:
When the rains come, budgies have plenty to eat. Their favorite foods, the seeds of grasses, grow quickly during rainy spells.

The fresh grasses have a high moisture content.

Since I am not familiar with the circus diet, I can't answer this question.
I don't know if the grass seeds are their favorite food or not. I do know that when they are available that they are a large part of their diet and that there is a big difference in fresh grass seed and the dried grass seeds that we can buy. One of the reasons that I know there is a big difference is that I often go out and harvest some of the grass seed for my birds. Budgies are native to arid and semi arid regions of Australia and have evolved some water conserving features according to some scientific sources but I don't know exactly what they are or how they work, but I would assume that part of it would be to obtain certain amounts of water from what they eat.

I harvest grass seed heads for my birds too! But I just learned about it. How do you tell what optimum harvest time is?

Some variety of gloop and chop should be the base of their food. Then add whatever you come up with that is low fat and protein. I give them a share of whatever I am eating before adding salt or butter. (I use butter buds for me). Plain popcorn makes a good together snack in the evening for us.

I think that you also have to be careful about too many carbohydrates as well. Just learning more about them in regards to parrots.

Well, the circus diet is, basically, a kind of cheap gloop with the following differences:

1. they use sprouts of cheap seeds all year round (they actually say to buy wild bird seed for it)
2. they don't use whole grains
3. they use dry corn (which I don't approve of)
4. they don't offer raw produce whole or in large chunks to their parrots
5. they leave the same food there for 24 hours
6. it's not organic

Aside from this, I don't like the idea of giving them beans cooked in crock pots and I found the following statement to be incredibly irresponsible on their part:
"This list of 18 foods was taken form a list of 30 poisonous foods list I found on the internet. Asparagus, Kidney Beans, Lima Beans, Butter, Coffee, Carbonated Beverages, Chocolate, Dried fruits, Egg Plant, Gatorade, Dairy Products, Olives, Onions (raw or cooked), Peanuts, Rhubarb, Tomatoes, Alcohol, Anything high in salt, sugar and fat content.

All of these items are fed at Hartman Aviary. We do not commonly feed alcohol but we have had many parties where birds are invited and we know for sure that most parrots love beer."

But then, these people are breeders...

Personally, I think that, in terms of quality and variety, the gloop diet (if we can call it that) is superior to the circus diet.
