Green Poop?

Postby Paul » Fri May 29, 2015 8:28 am

I have been looking for information on what healthy parrot faeces should look like but the information I have found has been quite varied.
Some sources say that green faeces indicates problems such as liver damage or chlamydia psittaci, but a lot of sources claim green (or brown) faeces is perfectly normal and healthy.

Talia's urates and urine appear as they should (white and clear) but her faeces is usually green or greenish. It tends to be more green on her first morning poop (which she kindly decided to fly around and distribute all over the living room this morning).

She is fed on Harrison's Pellets as well as plenty of fresh veg, some fruit and whatever treats (mostly sunflower seeds) she earns throughout the day.

She seems happy and healthy and there are no other signs of sickness but I just wanted to know if her poop is normal.

She is a 1 year old Blue-crowned Conure. I have attached some pics of her poop from this morning...
The first pic is part of her first morning poop, and the second is about an hour later after she had had some breakfast (pellets and a little banana). She had peas and sweet potato yesterday evening.
The last pic is of a dry poop. It goes kinda black when it's dried out:

If anyone could let me know whether these seem like normal droppings or not I would appreciate it.

Thanks

The feces part of the poop (little green wormy looking thing) is normal. Green birds feces are normal, it's when the urates and/or the urine turns green that is real bad. The urates are also normal (not too much and of nice white color). What's not 100% normal is the very small amount of urine the bird is producing (there should have been a larger stain around the poops and the morning poop should have been much looser). Do you use a bottle for watering instead of a bowl? Because, if you do, take it out and replace it with a bowl as the bird appears to not be drinking enough water to make up for the unnatural dryness of the pellets and could end up with chronic mild dehydration which, in time, will affect the kidneys.

There is usually more urine than that. The morning poop was all over the place as she flew before I could get her to her poop spot and did it mid-flight. That pic is of just part of it. She has both a water bowl and water bottle.

The reason I posed the question is because I took her to an avian vet for a check up the other day and the vet said that green poop (faeces) can mean Chlamydia psittaci. She said it is unlikely as I have no other birds but it got me a little concerned, so I checked the internet and found quite varied information on the subject. I thought it would be good to get a few opinions on here about how her poop looked.

Here's a poop she just did. You can see more urine in this one:

So these seem ok?

Sorry for all the poop pics btw. Kinda gross post lol.

Thanks for your input :)

I still don't see as much urine as I would like for my taste - pellets do 'suck up' lots of water from the body because they are so unnaturally dry. I don't see anything wrong with the color although birds that eat pellets usually have brownish poop instead of the green that birds produce when eating a fresh food diet so maybe that's what your vet meant. Why not do a chlamydia test? They are not that expensive and it would give you peace of mind -well, up to a point because you do get false negatives with them, too.

Really? She does get fresh veg every day too and she seems to drink enough but I will keep an eye on that.
I think I will get her tested just to be on the safe side, but as it costs £80 for the test, I will have to wait until the end of the month.
Thanks again for your feedback.

Check with online avian labs, they are as accurate as the ones used by avian vets but much, much more inexpensive. For example, a test for chlamydia goes for $24.50 in this lab: http://www.avianbiotech.com/Index.htm - and they have a branch in England.
