HELP! Am I Contagious?

Postby JaydeParrot » Thu Jun 04, 2015 3:20 am

Have recently caught a rather severe cold, sore throat, coughing, blocked nose, headaches. How careful do I need to be around my Sennies? I've had it for two days, I fed them honey a day ago hoping it would help prevent them from catching whatever I have. Starting today because I've gotten worse, I've closed the door to their room, not physically interacting with them and am very careful when handling their food.

Do I need to be this cautious? I know birds can get respritaory diseases, I'm just worried they might catch something off me.

It's not a great situation for either of us because they always get hugs and kisses on the head and now I think they're a bit confused and upset at being locked in the their cage (the room their in currently isn't safe to leave them outside the cage on their own), am I being a bit overly cautious?

How likely is it that a sennie would catch my cold? Cain sneezed almost ten times in a row when I had her on my shoulder yesterday and now I'm just scared to have them around me. I was feeding her millet (my hands were washed) at the time so I'm not sure if it was a cold or whether she just got a millet seed stuck in her throat or nose- admidettedly I got scared when she sneezed, put her in her cage, left the room checked to see if she was breathing properly 15 minutes later (she was breathing fine) and then stayed away from the room.

Should I feed them more honey (my family's general cure for a cold), or would that be pointless/ cause more harm than good?

Thanks for reading this.

Although, I would try not to sneeze on them and perhaps wash my hands before handling them, that is just a general precaution. There are very few things that you get that can infect your bird and very few things that your bird catches that you can get.
I like honey, but I think that I have read that honey is not always a good idea to give to your birds.

Thanks for the answers, my birds never caught my cold, so I guess there was no need to worry, thanks again, :).

Birds cannot catch the common cold virus but they can catch bacterial infections that would affect their lungs and air sacs.

Honey does not cause them to have sores around their beaks (that's caused by a fungal infection). People talk about honey causing botulism but it only happens with honey that has not be packaged or bottled correctly and when their immune system is depressed (HIGHLY unlikely!). The only problem with honey is the high content of sugar but a bit of it is fine as it has natural and not processed sugars (you can try Royal Jelly with propolis, instead, it's even more beneficial than honey).
