Feeding Routine Help

Postby Bguns » Sun Jun 21, 2015 12:58 pm

Hello people of the Parrot Forums!

I have recently came up with a rough draft of my new feeding routine for my 2 birds, a :gcc: and a :greycockatiel:. Here it is"

Morning (9am) - Fresh fruits/veggies, and sometimes an egg.

Evening (4pm) - 1 Teaspoon or Tablespoon of a good seed mix.

Dinner time (6pm) - Dinner foods: Chicken, pasta, rice etc.

And they will have Zupreem fruit pellets in their cage 24/7

Is this a good feeding schedule? Should I change anything?

Zupreem pellets are soy-based which many birds are actually allergic to. I was originally going to try and switch my GCC to them, but when I found out about that, I threw them out and started her on a homemade gloop diet instead. I'm sure Wolf or Pajarita can advise you further on that matter. :)

I think that you need to do further research into the dietary requirements of your birds as well as their normal feeding habits, as this will help you to know more accurately how, when and what to feed them.
Here is what and how I feed my birds as well as when I feed them, I would recommend a similar feeding schedule and diet for yours.
Shortly after my birds wake up in the morning which is sunrise I feed them a fresh raw vegetable, a fresh fruit and a fresh leafy green( staying away from spinach). I give a different one of each of these daily. About an hour later I feed my birds Gloop which is a home made cooked food consisting od 40% cooked whole grains, 40% cooked mixed vegetables and 20% cooked white beans and lentils. They are given enough of all of these foods to last the day. Then about 6 pm at this time of the year I feed a good quality seed mix for dinner which is removed from the cage when the bird goes to sleep around dark. The exact time of dinner is based upon what time it starts to get dusk in the late afternoon.
I hope that this will be helpful to you.

Both my tiels and my GCC (as well as all the other parrots) eat gloop and raw produce for breakfast (tiels don't eat the fruit or the raw veggie usually but they do eat the ones chopped up and mixed in the gloop), the time depends on the season as they get it when the sky is lit and a good seed mix for dinner, again, the time depends on the season as it's served when the sun is halfway down to the horizon. Both my tiels and my GCC eat ABBA 1600 (budgie mix) during the winter but during spring and summer all the way up to when they are through with molt, they get ABBA 1600-C (cockatiel mix) with a bit of hemp and quinoa added to it for higher and better quality protein. I don't feed eggs (too high in cholesterol, protein and fat) but, this year, I started adding some insect protein mixed in with their gloop (insect meat has no cholesterol and because I use the freeze dried one, is not high in fat) during the height of the breeding season (March, April) and during molt (early July?).
