Brussel Sprouts

Postby Michael » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:01 am

I went to the supermarket to get some Kili mix (broccoli, carrots, and snap peas) but they didn't have it and all the other prepackaged mixes are expiring today or tomorrow, yuck. So I decided to try some new stuff on her.

Image

I got the snap peas separately cause that's like her favorite food. She can chew up the shell and then eat out the peas from inside. Do you think you're supposed to wash these? I did just in case. Usually I buy the precut veggie mix which is meant to be eaten out of the bag so I don't wash those.

Here's her meal laid out for her:

Image

I usually break the string beans in half so when she drops them they fall through the grate rather than hanging around to be picked up later. I think this encourages her to be neater with her food too.

I always wash the veggies, whether they are prepackaged to eat right away (which I rarely buy) or not.

I tend to buy different veggies and cut them out and store in a bowl for a few days in the fridge. I add an orange or a lemon (depending on what I have on hand) to help keep to food fresher longer. I always have my boyfriend smell (I can't smell) cause if there is any doubt it's starting to smell bad, it gets tossed (I normally finish it before it gets to that point). I also check for food being weirdly coloured or slimy.

This week's mix had (all raw by the way):
-Carrots (almost always have carrots)
-Broccoli (my birds seem to enjoy it more than myself..)
-Red chard
-Orange bell pepper
-Cauliflower (?...might not have it in the mix..I think it is, but not might not be..)
-Pomegranate seeds (they LOVE these..)
-An orange
-An apple

It is what I had on hands, I sometimes add Sweet potatoes (NOT yams), snap peas (another favorite however they aren't in season and didn't look great), brussels sprouts (which they seem to enjoy), any other type of greens (dandelions, kale, green chard..) and whatever else I can find that is suited for birds. I tend to have a higher ratio of veggies compared to fruits.

I might take a picture later and post it.
To this I normally add some sprouts in their bowls.

Do you feed her the precut veggie mix everyday along with pellets and other stuff?

I try to give Chou foods that he can interact with in ways other than 'gobble chomp' and snap and snow peas are great for this... He's learned to tear away the fibrous part of the pod so he can eat the peas without worrying about the shell. :) So smart!

I've heard that snap peas are often brushed with a particularly noxious pesticide... Also, is it my imagination or are they prone to that faint dusting of yeast that one sees on grapes? Could just be the natural texture of the pod, I guess...?

I am buying a new veggie mix for my tiel today and it has: broccoli, carrots, cauliflower and snap peas. I've heard that feeding too much broccoli could lead to the bird not being able to take in calcium and the carrots can lead to yeast infection, is this true? I would feed this mix every day if it is ok so does anyone know?

My birds like brussels sprouts but I don't think I've ever given them snap peas before. I was actually looking at a package of snap peas two days ago and wondering if they would like them. Do your birds eat fruit as well? Four of mine won't touch fruit and the other one loves it.

Natacha, are we not supposed to give yams but only sweet potatoes?

I wash everything before giving it to the birds. Even baby carrots in plastic bags. I also won't give them the imperfect ones.

How do you afford to buy 'pre cut' veggies for your birds?? Why not buy them loose and buy a bit extra, keep it in the fridge. Heck you could cut it up the night before if it's quicker for you. Our birds get so excited when they see us cutting up fruit or veg.
Escouve, my snow peas (are snow peas the same as snap peas??) growing on the plant have that powdery film over them so I doubt it's a pesticide.

Both parrots love snap peas. They both eat some fruit but I never give it in cages, only as treats for tricks. Neither likes berries, citrus, or melon of any kind. But they both enjoy apple, banana, mango, and grape as treats. Incredibly it seems that one of their absolute favorite fresh foods is corn. They go crazy for corn.
