I learned that garlic is okay, like anything else, in moderation. Onions, though one would think being similar, apparently aren't as safe. I've been giving our :senegal: the powdered form of garlic daily with his sprouts and he's happier than ever. I think the garlic has helped immensely with a yeast infection he had. I tried giving him a clove of garlic to chew on, but he didn't like it. That's just him, though. I think he doesn't like fresh foods in general. Anyway, giving a bird a clove of garlic once a week or so just for variety definitely can't hurt. And I'd imagine the tiny bit you'd chop and put into your foods wouldn't hurt either.

I got the impression that garlic was deadly to your birds.. :/

It was on the same list (on many websites) with coffee, chocolate etc

Now I feel bad, all the times Sheldon wanted my pasta and I didn't give it to him because I added garlic XD

I don't think our parrots are missing out on anything whether we feed them things like garlic or not. I say better safe than sorry. Stick to the grains, fruits, and veggies.

No garlic. If I remember my class correctly garlic is like onions a blood thinner.

As stated previously stick with pellets, fruits and veggies only. If you want to add some zip you can throw in a hot pepper. Just remember you did before you give kisses. :cockatiel:

this is info im quoting directly from 2010 annual "birds USA" publication, which i think is awesome:

"garlic is related to onions and has similar chemical compounds. Garlic contains allicin, which in rare cases can cause Heinz body hemolytic anemia in birds"

"onions, whether cooked, raw or dehydrated, contain sulfur compounds that when chewed, can cause hemolysis or a rupture of the red blood cells, which can cause anemia. According to Margaret A Wissman DMV, DABVP - Avian Practice, they can also potentially cause irritation to a birds mouth, esophagus and crop, and they can even cause ulcers"

Also on their list of things to avoid is : avocado (most people know about that one), fresh/raw tomoatoes, mushrooms, and the strings on celery (the strings cause crop impaction, but de-stringed celery is fine)

Like Michael said, its better to be on the safe side with any foods!
parrots arent mere ornaments, and they're hardly "just a pet" they are intelligent and emotional creatures who want our companionship. As a bird owner, its a pleasure to make my parrots lives as happy, enriched and healthy as possible

I've seen plenty of cases where people give tomatoes to parrots, and I've seen it listed as safe in many places. I myself give Peanut tomatoes once in a while, but not often because my dad wants to use them for cooking. :D I google searched this, and found a thread on here. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5473

But yes, I would never give garlic to Peanut. It smells too, and I tend to avoid smelly things around Peanut. But, what about powdered garlic in small amounts? Is that okay?

My parrots' whole grains are cooked with tomato paste and they get fresh cherry or grape tomatoes almost every week. They also get their gloop flavored with garlic once a week (the pizza flavor which also has black olives, oregano, chopped green peppers and sundried tomatoes, paprika and black pepper). I've been doing this for about 15 years and they are all doing very well on this diet.
