Very little poop?

Postby Porkemon » Fri Jul 17, 2015 11:32 am

My cousin got an IRN 2 day ago, during my visit to his house, I noticed that the IRN's poop is very small and the urates and urine is quite yellowish, it's really really active and doesn't seem to be interested in eating at all unless I give the food to him/her.

Is there anything wrong? Does s/he still require handfeeding?
I'm not very sure about his/her age as my aunt didn't ask during the purchase so I attached a photo here, what's the approximate age of him/her?

Age wise all we can tell for certain is that it is a juvenile due to the absence of the neck rings. Birds do not show age in the same manner as other animals do although there are a few times in some of their lives that you can guess pretty close. The best way is to check for a solid band on its leg. If it has one then the year of hatch will be on it.
I would suggest that you get some weaning formula and a decent gram scale and mix and feed the weaning food as directed on the package. Also get a thermometer for checking the temperature of the formula before feeding it to the bird as feeding it too hot or too cold can cause serious complications. I would find the thread in the health, nutrition and diet section called Gloop for dummies and start making this food for him and wean him to it and a budgie seed mix for feeding it for dinner. If the bird seems to have problems eating the seeds then soak the seeds for a few hours and rinse and drain well before offering them and then take the excess seed out when the bird goes to sleep.

Yellow urine and urates can mean many things from psittacosis to dehydration (which, if the bird is not eating well, it's very possible) so I suggest you do change the diet as Wolf suggested but also take this bird to the vet because, if he has a disease, he could die without treatment.
