First Vet Visit

Postby karenkc1994 » Fri Jul 17, 2015 1:36 pm

So I just got a baby jenday conure about a week ago. He is 11 weeks old now. How important is it for me to take him to the vet for a check-up? Usually, people don't go to the doctor's/vet's unless there is an illness or issue involved. So in my opinion, I don't really see a point in taking him in. However, I do want him to live a healthy, happy life. Should I take him to a vet? If so, what would I ask for, procedure-wise? Like just a check-up, or lab tests, bloodwork, etc?

My dear, I know of baby birds that were sold by the breeders sick with psittacosis, polyoma, PDD, AGY and a genetic defect that killed the bird by the time it was 5 months old (a member here) so if I were you, I would not assume that the bird is fine just because it's a baby.

As to a wellness exam, it's usually a visual exam and blood work (CBC and chem panel) as a minimum.
