I started by giving them a new emery board to play with so they would be comfortable with it.

That is a good suggestion, Liz. I know that anything I am trying to use, emery board, pencil, weekly flyers ( and they always want the one you are currently viewing, not the lot on the table or couch beside you ! lol) all are of GREAT interest to the birds ! It's like when you are trying to do something for yourself, ergo, your whole attention is not on THEM, the become incredibly interested in whatever it is you are doing !

I even had a Fancy cat drawn in by the sound and wanted her nails done.

This is a hugely important piece of information to know about your birds. It can greatly assist you in training, earning their trust and building a good relationship with your bird as well as teaching us the finer aspects of sharing with each other. Not to mention getting them to eat a healthier diet.

I'm concerned, though- Isn't the emery board harmful to them if they chew it up?

I think it is just sand on a board.
Mine will chew up anything and everything and then spit it out. If they swallowed the stuff they would have to have their stomachs pumped every day.

Yes, Shira, emery boards are not really safe for parrots, they have insoluble mineral elements and glue on them.
