paranoid?

Postby marie83 » Mon Jul 27, 2015 6:31 pm

Ok yesterday I noticed ollie was making a funny noise when passing his droppings. It's not a vocal noise but like a squeaking from his lower abdomen vent area. His poop seems completely normal, he is eating, drinking and bathing normally.
I thought it might be a one off but the noise keeps on happening since I noticed.

also tonight he crash landed! First time ever he has made more than a teeny mistake which are ridiculously rare anyway. If he makes a teeny misjudgement he corrects on a split second, turning on a hairpin and lands elsewhere. Tonight though, he was flying over from his cage on to the back of the sofa and literally completely missed and fell down between the back of the sofa and the wall.

I was going to get him a check up when my vets back anyway but now I'm really paranoid :(

The squeaking from the vent seems normal to me. That's exactly how I'd describe the sound.

As far as missing a landing spot, I've seen birds in the wild do this quite often. Ducks trying to land on dry land can be especially comical. I don't think they have very good depth perception.

I've seen Myrtle playing with a toy and loose her balance. She does not let go of her toy so she falls down.

I would take him for a check up as soon as I could just to have piece of mind.

Hmm well I've never heard any of my birds make a squeaking noise in 16 years so yes this has concerned me in light of recent events :(

As for the falling, I get it birds aren't robots and do occasionally mess up but ollie doesn't usually miss a beat and even if he does make a mistake it's not usually on such a big landing space. He us incredibly agile. Again though in light of recent events the two things combined has caused concern.

Thanks for your comments. It's helped.

I do suggest that Ollie see your vet as soon as it is feasible to do so, but I don't think that these events are related.

Myrtle flies as good as a Humming bird. She can hover and fly sideways to get through skinny places but she still does crashes now and then. It is just being careless at that moment. Sort of missing your turn while driving because you were thinking of something else.

Take him to the vet. Birds don't make any noise when they poop because they don't even pass gas so, unless we are talking about the plop the poop makes as it hits the floor, there is no noise whatsoever when the poop is normal.

And yes, some birds don't land very gracefully on the ground but that's only true of species which feet are not meant for it (parrots' feet are for climbing and ducks for swimming). If you look at a canary (passerine), a pigeon (columbine) or a quail (galliforme), all birds that either live or go to ground to eat, you will see that they are always very graceful in their landings... But parrots are always very good at landing on high spots.

Well I've been trying to get an appointment but no joy. Keep ringing for cancellations (3 times today!) but nothing.
Ollie seems ok but still squeaking as he passes his poop. He is very clingy- more than usual. I'm not sure if that's because of Harlies loss. There have been no more falls, it seems to have been a one off. I have an appointment for Monday first thing but its ages until then. I will keep trying for cancellations but should I insist they see him sooner?

I would just keep an eye on him and, if the only thing is the squeaking when pooping, I would wait until Monday but, if I see anything else, I would call back and insist.

My bird's have always made a squeaky sound while pooping, though, I always thought the sound was a habitual sound coming from their mouths.
