Once or twice a year I have to take a trip that would prevent me from been home at their dinner time and what I do is put the seeds UNDER the gloop. It doesn't really work very well because they are smart and would dig them out as soon as they start peeping out through the gloop but, as it happens so very seldom, it doesn't really worry me. Years ago, when I was working full time and commuting, my husband fed them dinner so, if the question was meant for every day during the winter, I suggest you get somebody to come over UNLESS you can find a feeder that would work with a timer but, of course, the timer will mean that the bird is alone all day long and goes to sleep without seeing anybody which is not good.
