Crayola's appetite

Postby Kakariki » Wed Aug 19, 2015 12:25 pm

:sun:
Last October when I got Crayola (5 yrs old) she would not eat fruit or veg. Anything I held up would make her squawk and move away. By eating a bit myself and her seeing the other birds eat it she was not long in coming around. Now that I am serving gloop she loves that too.
Crayola seems to have become a bottomless pit. Can or will a bird overeat when the diet is healthy?

Also, how much gloop per bird should I expect them to eat? Kaleesi :irn: ate a GOOD rounded tablespoon this morning.

I haven't noticed my birds getting fat. I have been giving Kiki, my Senegal two teaspoons of gloop every morning for over two years, there is usually some left by dinner time.

As I type, Crayola is eating AGAIN. she finished her morning ration, a tablespoon, and is on a second helping ( I have read in other post here to keep the gloop available until supper/seed time. She has also had some apple, a raspberry and extra peas so far and it is only after 2 pm. If this is ok, great. She just REALLY LOVES THAT GLOOP!

I don't see any problem with this, my birds eat mostly in the morning, but nibble on their gloop all day long. Once in a while I have to add a little more, but not too often. With my larger birds, I don't give them more if they run out and it is only about an hour until dinner time, but if it is much longer than that I will give them a little more.

I've been free-feeding gloop for many, many years and I always make sure to give enough so there is some leftover when I go to pick up their morning plates and replace them with their dinner in the evening so, if I see a plate is empty two days in a row, I make their portion larger the next day (my birds share plates) and I don't have any overweight bird so go ahead and let her eat as much as she wants. It's good for her.
