eva - budgie growth on back and abdominal swelling

hi all, i am new to the forum and would like some information if at all possible, eva had an external growth removed from her back. it was near her preen gland, yellow, crumbly and looked like a cauliflower floret. it was held on by a thread of tissue and was taken off. she has since developed tail bobbing, sqeaking when flying and breathing problems, she had an x-ray which showed an enlargement of an abdominal organs, but the vet was not sure if it was her spleen and said nothing could be done. eva is only 2 years old. any ideas on what is going on with my little girl would be most welcome. thank you

Your post does cause me to wonder at the causes of these problems, but I would not venture a guess without seeing copies of the x rays and pictures of the bird. Please post these with as much information as you can.

thank you for a quick reply. i do not have the x-ray plates, they with the vet. i will try and post a picyure of eva asap. most grateful

You can get a copy of the x rays from the vet, tape them to a window and photograph them. The pics of the bird will help will seeing the birds condition, but based on your posts we really need to see what is in the x rays.

We would not be able to see more than the vet did, Wolf. Budgies are soooo very small that identifying different internal organs in XRays (which are not meant for soft tissue but bones) is almost impossible. I mean, the spleen, normally, is about 1/5 the size of the liver and it's right next to it so it's not only that it's super teeny tiny in a budgie, it's that you wouldn't be able to tell where the liver ended and the spleen started!

Now, if there are enlarged internal organs, the labored breathing, tail bob, etc are all been caused by the displacing and 'squeezing' of the air sacs impeding their proper 'inflation' so to speak. Have you had a bile acids test done on her? Was she bred by you or did you buy her from somebody? Has this been going on from day one? Because avian herpes affects both the liver and the spleen...

Pajarita, what you say makes sense to me and I didn't think that we would be able to see anything more than the vet could, but I didn't see anything saying much about what organs were being affected. Still you know far more than I do, I am waiting to see what you have to say about this as more comes to light.

hello again, Eva was bred by me, one of four chicks. this problems has only developed over the past few months. no other tests were done. we are off to see our vet next week. there are no "avian" vets here, but we were referred to her as she is an exotics specialist, i will send a picture of Eva tonight. thanks.

Awww, and what a beautiful little girl she is! Gorgeous throat spots!!! Does she go into condition normally? I am asking because the picture shows she is not in condition at the time it was taken and her cere looks a bit too pale to me -but it could be the picture itself. Have you noticed if her claws grow faster than the other birds? Her beak? Was a biopsy done on the growth removed? Have you tried non-traditional medicine? Like herbal supplements and such? Have you changed her diet in case it's her liver or her immune system? What, exactly do you feed? Light schedule?

thank you for your reply. vet advised against doing autopsy, but it was the strangest crumbly yellow growth. she has lost her brown cere so i know she is not well. try them with every king of fruit and veg but they are stubborn seed eaters. i will try anything to help her, but her breathing is squeaky and at times her tail bobbing is very pronounced. she is a lovely natured bird. madge ps her nails are not growing at any different rate
