Emergency. Window hit.

Postby Roonil Wazlib » Mon Sep 14, 2015 2:45 am

so my boy hit the glass twice today :( first time he got cliny and quiet, but appeared to brush it of somewhat quickly. But he did it again about 45 min ago, and now is alot more cliny and quiet. He's holding inward on himself - like hes a bit lower then usual, but is still standing, and usually he holds his neck out long and high, but hes as close to his body as he can get. - i just wrapped my fingers around to get him to extend it, and though he resisted, he didn't appear to be in pain. - But i know birds are good at hiding that stuff.
His beak is all scuffed - so i think it took the brute force, rather then his little head. He didn't get knocked out. He tried to eat the nut we gave him, but abandoned it after a while - i think his beak area is tender, but he did have a long drink.
He seems to be a bit lethargic, and keeps closing his eyes every so often, which I'm the most worried about - mainly he did it for the first five minets just after the collision, and stopped afterward - he's done it a couple of times in the last hour now since he hit, bit seems okey - just a little rattled.
What should I do about a vet visit? do you think he needs one, should i monitor him longer?

He's standing normal and he walking fine. He doesn't much like my dad, and dad extended his arm out, and Julian ran up my arm real quick like he normally does is that situation.
my boy is an eclectus. two years

I also want to quickly say that the room he's in is not a new room - he's known it for at least two months for a couple of days on a weekly basis (im at my mums) Once, he ran into the glass sliding door, but didn't do it again, and this is the first time he's flown into windows

Update: he just yawned, and made his grumpy noise - so i defiantly think there is some damage to his beak area.

Update: It's been almost two hours since he hit, and he is getting back to normal.

If nothing else you know that he has to have a killer head ache. Just like a kid he is staying close so Mom can kiss it and make it better.
My cockatiels have a 10X10 room and still fly into a wall now and then. They have had these walls for months now and still get careless.

Well something about the room bothers him enough to try to escape. I have no idea as to what that might be, it could be an object or even the play of light and shadow. He sounds like he is a bit dazed and I am sure that his beak, head and neck are a bit tender from the impact. It is possible that he suffered a mild concussion, but he should still recover from it fine. I would keep a watch on him for a couple of days, but I don't think that a vet would do much although they could take x rays to assess any possible damage to hard tissue.

Parrots don't like been taken out of their comfort zone and that means the place where they live. The 'taking your parrot with you wherever you go as if it was a dog' is a VERY recent fad, actually. Nobody ever did it a few years ago so, in truth, we don't even know what kind of long term consequence this practice could have as it doesn't resemble anything they do in the wild (parrots never leave their territory) and we have no historical reference for it. Obviously, two days a week hasn't given him a sense of comfort or he wouldn't have freaked out and crash against a window, and if he doesn't even like your dad, he must be stressed out while he is in there...

Just watch him closely. Check his poop, too (I don't think he would have any internal bleeding but better safe than sorry, right?). Ekkies have soft beaks -as far as parrots beaks go- and get them bruised more easily than other species so, most likely, he is in a bit of pain from it but nothing to worry about if there is no crack in it. I doubt there is any lasting damage because he didn't even got knocked out by the crash but, if I were you, I would stop taking him to your parents' home.

Were you in the room when he crashed, Roonil? Could he be trying to get out to find you?

I don't know what you can do if he is, but it might be an explanation.

He's fine and back to normal. No clue what it was that did it, but going to cover the windows up for a while now, i think. Thank you for your responses.

Since parrots see into the ultra violet they see so many more colors than we do that we are nearly color blind in comparison. It makes one wonder what else they can see that we don't. Either way, they see differently enough from us that it is hard to know what may have caused him to panic.

The other problem is that parrots bred in captivity and hand-fed are exposed to light when they should be in the dark to allow their eyes to finish development properly so, in many, many cases, they have faulty vision (similar to presbyopia in humans).

clipping is like insult to injury. it is like if a tddler is clumsy you tie his legs tgether so he cant walk and hurt himself. he is still going to try and get hurt worse.
