Refrigerated seeds

Postby LJ4RockPebbler » Mon Sep 14, 2015 11:18 am

I buy my bird his seeds without the shell and bagged from an organic supermarket and I store them in the refrigerator. I read somewhere that seeds should never be refrigerated, any suggestions? Also, is it safe to feed my bird cheerios, organic instant oatmeal and baby food. Thanks

You can refrigerate seed. I put new seed in the freezer for 24 hours to kill any pantry moths that may be in the bag.

No cheerios, No baby oatmeal. They do love them though. I don't know much but I know I was told to keep the protein level down and not to feed human foods that have supliments added.
Only non fortified steel cut oats. I buy my grains from the health food store. I found a bran cereal that was not fortified. I don't feed dried fruit because it is consentrated sugar.

Sorry, I also never learned to spell.

You can put them in the fridge but you should not put them in the freezer. Freezing changes the chemical composition of oils (that's why you should never put coffee in the freezer or even in the fridge). But, what kind of seeds do you buy that have no hulls? Because I can only think of a few like sunflowers, safflowers and pumpkin... And why would you? I mean, half the fun for them is to 'peel' them...

I buy his seeds at Mrs. Greens organic supermarket. The seeds come in sealed bags and are not shelled. Where can I purchase the shelled sunflower seeds that are organic and without salt? Thanks

Why don't you just get a good quality seed mix meant for birds without sunflowers and just buy organic no-salt sunflowers for treats? Whole Foods has them...

I get mine directly from the manufacturer, ABBA, in NJ. They open on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 noon and sell directly to people they know (they started with canary breeders only but now parrot keepers go there, too). I not only get a much better price than I would in any store but I also get the seed real fresh because I know it has not been sitting on a shelf. ABBA seed mixes are not sold in supermarkets or even large petstore chains, they are only sold in specialized bird stores.

I know you can get some of their products from Amazon but I also think you can order directly from them AND they used to have a page with all the local bird stores they supply. This is their site: http://www.abbaseed.com/Seed_Products/s ... ducts.html

Sorry Parajita but I'm having a hart time finding their products on Amazon. On the link you sent me, what's the seed mix product that you're comfortable with and do you soak them. I have a small regent parrot/rock pebble. Thanks
