Sudden Senegal feather barbering!

Postby JaydeParrot » Tue Sep 22, 2015 5:19 am

Lately Hide, My Sennie has been doing fine and not chewing any feathers, suddenly he's at it again, he has a mate, I figured he was bored so I gave him more stuff to do, I figured he was sad so I took him around with me more often, he was sat on my shoulder a few minutes ago while I was at the computer and I heard a sound, looked at him he stopped doing what ever it was for a while, i took out a mirror held it up to watch what he was doing, he looked like he was preening and then suddenly chewed off a flight feather- he now has no flight feathers on his left side. He eats well and seems fairly content the only thing I can think of is his new ingrowing feathers are irritating him (he hasn't pulled off any left hand feathers).

I know feather plucking can be a sign of illness, but barbering?

Does anyone know how to test for kidney issues? Maybe that's it?

Also, can parrots eat dandelion and tumeric, I've heard it's good for the liver...

While I know that dandelion is good for parrots, I don't know about turmeric.

My dear, although it's not completely impossible, I seriously doubt he is barbering his primaries because of liver issues. It's always better to eliminate all medical issues but, in my personal experience, 99.9999% of birds that pluck do it from sexual frustration, anxiety and/or stress. I don't know what light schedule and diet you are using with them but, If I remember correctly, you are always taking these two birds outside with you and, in my personal opinion, this is a big stressor for birds so you might want to reconsider all the outings as well as re-evaluate your husbandry.
