Ah liz your just like me lol. I spend way more on feeding and caring for the animals than I do my partner and I. I can't really cut back on the shop for us anymore than I have already though. I just can't justify spending £40 odd on a single bag of grain when I need more than one type even if it will last ages but luckily thesilversakura seems to have come up with an alternative for me which I'll have a look at tonight.

Wow, I guess that England has not 'caught on' the health food frenzy we have here in the States! Here, even the larger 'regular' supermarkets have all kinds of packaged whole grains...

I did not know what pot barley was so I looked it up and the difference between hulled, pot and pearled is that hulled is the whole grain, pot has been dehulled and put through the 'pearling' process but less than the 'pearled' barley so, although pot is a bit better than pearled, hulled is best.

Black and red rice are whole grain rices that are more nutritious than brown rice. Black rice gets the color from the same antioxidant that blueberries have (and, when you cook it, you will see that the water comes out purple) and red is actually the most nutritious rice there is, even more than the black! Well I have a little pearl barely left from the last lot of food I bought but I was wanting to switch to proper stuff on my next order. It seems the only barely readily available over here is pearl. If you look a little harder you can get flaked, pot, etc. The only place I have been able to find hulled is on amazon and art. Even that's quite expensive, your looking at less that a kg for £15.30 upwards.

I may try the black rice in that case, that's £3.99 for 500g
Red rice I can actually get too individually but I though it was supposed to be a certain type or doesn't it matter? these literally don't have much detail in the description so was unsure whether to get it.
This is the rice mix thesilversakura suggested. http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/p ... x-60086895 Everything else has as little detail (where its from etc).

The last batch I made had very little in it really but it was just a starter mix to see how we got on before ordering all this expensive stuff! oats, barley, (a little) brown rice, quiona, beans, red lentils. 50% veggies. They were also getting fresh veg and fruit, then TOPS 4 nights per week and seed the other nights. We wasn't doing very well with the TOPS though as it was just getting crumbled up with very little eaten so whatever was left got sprinkled on the chop/gloop.

Can you believe I can't even get the frozen squash or artichoke and that kind of thing in our supermarkets?

I guess that there are drawbacks to living on an island... even if it is a big one.

Try raw food in your search. In Canada, I get all my grains and nuts and seeds to sprout from a raw food wholesale place for humans. It is cheaper than any store out there for high quality you can trust.

On the first link, Real foods, look under raw savories the first link is legumes and grains.
I didn't find much in the second one, Planet organic. Also didn't find much on the last site either, Funky raw.
