Calcium and vit K2

Postby Pajarita » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:55 am

And still one more wrinkle in the calcium saga! We all know about the relationship between calcium absorption and vit D3 as well as the necessity for other minerals to balance with calcium but there is still another thing to take into consideration: vitamin K2! I am giving you some links so you can learn on your own but to make a long and complicated story short and easy: vit K2 is the one that transports calcium throughout the body and, although it can be found in animal protein, animals that are herbivores have the capacity to produce it themselves from food sources rich in vit K1 through the action of bacteria in their intestines so it's important that our birds not only eat foods rich in K1 but also that their intestinal good bacteria is kept at good healthy levels (raw food and some probiotics every now and then will do it).
