Does anyone know about MYNAHS?

Postby JaydeParrot » Thu Oct 22, 2015 7:09 am

Bit annoyed, the people who I was going to give a Bank Myna to came over, said it looked too much like a crow and that they didn't want it.

I was quite happy having two sennies, I really didn't want another bird, especially not a softbill, I have no idea what to feed it, bannanas, suet pellets and meal worms it'll eat (I know the last two probably aren't ideal). I've also tried giving it apple, elderberries, finely chopped carrots, oats, nyjer seeds, it refuses all the these except for the apple (which it occasionally pecks at but does really seem to want).

It can't be good to leave it on a meal of banana, suet and mealworms, does anyone else have a myna/know what a good everyday diet is for them, (mynas can't chew their food like parrots so they have to have small pieces), I've also heard they can't eat seeds?

Also does anyone know if it's possible to tame a myna and how to go about it? I think it's just under a year old, it'll bravely spint around everyone in the room but it doesn't like to be held/ step up. Is it possible to get a myna as tame as a sennie?

The myna bounces around constantly like the duracell rabbit, a few members of my family joked that if it was already so energetic, if it ever stole a sip of coffee it would explode, I agree, lol.

It just wants to hop all the time, very suprising when I compare it to my Sennies who are almost perch potatoes. I wouldn't mind except it's constant bouncing from place to place means it's poops get everywhere- I keep letting it out as I feel sad for it just watching it stuck in it's cage. Do mynas calm down as they get older or are they always this energetic?

Thanks.

Here is some information for you and I am still looking for more.

Mynah Rescue

http://www.mynahbird.org/articles/diet/diet.html

[SIZE=+1]The University of Hawaii uses the following feeding plan for rescued Common Mynahs:
A variety of human baby food that contains the most protein (like egg, veal, etc.) is fed to a really young bird.
As soon as the bird is a little bigger (lot's of feathers coming in, about 1 week before fledging), then the food is switched to the adult diet which is based on the recipe found in a book called Mynahs (by Otto von Frisch).
The mixture used is:
2 mashed bananas
2 1/2 handfuls of dry oatmeal
1 pound of small curd cottage cheese (4% milk fat)
2 handfuls of any commercial mynah/softbill food
Stirred all together, it should be the consistency of cookie dough. Refrigerate and give a dish full per day to each adult bird. For babies, warm up a small amount for each feeding. You can also make this stuff with baby food during the transition to make it have more of a liquid consistency.

This is from another forum that I am a member of. It also says to never feed seeds or parrot pellets to a Myna and that you have to keep vitamin A and C to a low level as the are prone to iron storage disease. Here is a link that may help you even more http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-he ... eeding/904
I can't say anything presently about trainability or personality but I do believe that they may learn to say some human words. I hope that this helps you some.
