Sprouted lentil mix

Postby ParrotsForLife » Sun Oct 25, 2015 12:28 pm

Today Rio came to the shop with me and I got Lentil sprout mix for the birds it contains Sprouted mung bean,Lentil crimson,Adzuki bean and chick pea.I gave the all the birds some and Tiko started eating right away.I was wondering where in their diet would lentils fit in and im getting sick of feeding pellets because you never know when the pet store will have them so im gonna do a complete diet change. This is my idea:

Morning/Breakfast:Lentils and some veg
Then later on some seed and maybe more lentils
(This diet is just for the tiels and Rio the pet store always has Tiko's pellets.)

I do not think this is very good as it is going to be too much protein, I think.

All they are eating now is seed they havent had pellets in a long time so im just gonna quit feeding it if the pet shop isnt gonna have it all the time.

Pellets are ground up seed. If pellets are too high in protein then so are the seeds. Try a gloop mix with your veggies. I mix 5 grains with carrots chopped in very small pieces. I soak them in a thermal cup of boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes then rinse them in cold water and drain. Everyone has accepted and enjoyed it except Rambo but I am still working on him.
I then feed budgie seed to my cockatiels at night. Budgie seed because there is no high fat and high protein sunflower in it.

Myrtle is at her end of the dining room table right now. She was eating her seed then went back to the grain gloop that I did not pick up yet.

Gloop is the name that Pajarita gave to the home cooked food that she feeds her birds. It is a mix of cooked whole grains, vegetables and legumes. I feed my birds a variation of it. Here read this:

Sprouted Legumes are good, but Wolf makes a good point that they are high protein so you need to make sure you dont over feed. Red Bellys eat a lot of Acacia in the wild and they are a legume, so I have always made sure to give her legume, since raw or natural Acai is hard to find. When she is moulting I let the protein be higher and when she is acting broody I decrease it.
