in regards to birdie bread

OMG, my grey loves this stuff. She is quite picky on food cuz previous owner never really gave her "salads" or any veggies in a bowl. She would only get a chunk of apple or grape as a treat. Well, I have had her for a week and trying to introduce new veggies and some I have luck with, some not so much. I found some recipes for birdie breads and baked up 2 different batches of muffins. One has green beans, pomegranate, carrots and peas in it the other is banana and pineapple. She loves this stuff!!! The first kind I put the muffin in her bowl and all that was left was a small amount of crumbs. Today I gave her a small part of a muffin to go along with her salad and immediately, all went quiet in the house cuz she was too busy eating. How often do you all give them the bread? I don't want to give it to her too often if its not good for her but I don't want to keep her from it if it won't hurt her.

I am sure that it is good for them and the more veggies in it the better it is for them and it is also a great way to provide an even greater variety in their diet, but I don't know of anyone that gives it to their birds more than once or twice a week.

My bird also loves it, like, as much as she loves apple :p I only give it to her as a treat, I think it depends allot on the recipie you use..
What recipie are you using? I love baking(although i dont do it that often).. and would be intrested in trying out yours:)
I got this ofline, but ive lost the site:( so i give credit to whoever made it..
The recipie I used was using:
-1cup of wholegrain flour
-an egg substitute(chia and water or flaxseed and water)
-1cup to 2cups of fruit and veg
-a handfull of seed/nut(paprika, more chia pr flaxseed ect:)
(it had no raising flour or yeast so it was really dense and the texture was really bad.) and then cook at i forget what heat and time :? but as you see I tried to avoid unnatural subsances. I
wrote the recipie and baking time on a sheet of paper so if i can find it i'll tell you the baking time and heat if you are intrested.
also: cornflour is bad to use(bad for your bird), you can always blend oats to a flour.
lol sorry.. im rambling

These are the recipes I have used so far... and both are a hit...
Parrot Veggie Muffins
1c flour (I used whole wheat flour)
1/2c uncooked oats
hemp seeds, didn't measure, just sprinkled in
raisins
1/3c grape nuts
chopped pecans
2 eggs (I didn't use the shells this time)
1/3c unsweetened applesauce
2 mashed bananas
1/2 peanut butter (can use other nut butters)
1c mixed veggies (I used peas, carrots and green beans this time)
Preheat oven to 400degrees, mix dry ingredients then add the rest. If mixture is too dry, slowly add a little water. You don't want it too wet, just wet enough to stick together.
Lightly grease muffin tin, I sprayed with canola oil. Fill with mixture, they don't raise at all so you can fill it completely.
Bake 12-15min until the tops start to brown and get a little crunchy. Let cool.

Banana-Pineapple Bran Bread
1 1/2 c mashed banana
1/2 c plain yogurt
1 c crushed pineapple with juice
1 egg
1 1/2 c all bran cereal
2 1/2c whole wheat flour
dash of salt
1c chopped nuts
1/2c raisins
1/2c flaked coconut(I didn't add it this time but maybe next)
Mash banana, add yogurt, egg and pineapple. Mix well. Add dry ingredients and mix. Add nuts and raisins. Grease 8x11 pan (I used muffin tin) with canola oil and bake at 350 for 50-60min, for muffins, I think it was about 30min. Let cool and store in fridge or freezer.

I will pop muffins in microwave sometimes before I give em to my bird. Either way, she likes em. The house goes silent when she gets a muffin, lol...

I don't use eggs, egg substitute or yogurt in my birdy bread. I use whole wheat flour, coarse corn meal, steel-cut oats (aka Irish oatmeal) and any other kind of flour that catches my fancy at the time (spelt, kamut, etc). I add pureed pumpkin and/or mashed sweet potatoes and/or organic apple sauce instead of using eggs to bind it. Dry yeast, a bit of honey (the yeast needs the sugar), a splash of olive oil (for the omega 3s), some fruit juice (I like orange for the vit C) to give it enough moisture to make the dough and any kind of goody I have handy. For birds that don't eat veggies, birdy bread is great because you can add all kinds of good stuff to it that they would not eat on their own... like grated zucchini or carrots, sweet corn and peas, chopped red/yellow/orange peppers, etc. And, of course, nuts as well as naturally dried fruits like figs, dates, raisins, currants... Try to stay away from peanut butter because even if you use the organic, all natural one that has only peanuts and salt in it (the regular one has all kinds of nasties in it), it's VERY high in omega 6s which are the ones that cause inflammation. My birds get birdy bread for breakfast instead of gloop once a week or so.

I make my own birdy bread, grated raw flax seeds are the base and to it I add grated veggies and raw sprouted seeds of all kinds and some seasonings good for parrots and just a little water if it is too dry but it usually isnt. Then I dehydrate it at 105F until it is crunchy they way they like. It is packed with nutrition so it can be feed a few times a week.
